Wow! It's been a couple months since I filled everyone in on our progress. Sorry about that but the shop has been nuts. Here we go.... Got the engine and trans in for the final fit, mounted the shifter, put in the metal floor pan that dad built years ago, got a start on the awesome Rebel wiring, installed the electric fan and radiator, got the pulleys right, mounted the alternator and the AC pump, carved a couple brackets out of aluminum, found the right belts, mounted the shifter, made a driveshaft, and on and on.... To catch you up to date, WE STARTED IT TODAY!!!!!!. I'll see what I can do about some updated pictures and possibly a video or two in the next few days. Wait till you see the look on his face every time we start it.
Here are a few of the pics I promised. The radiator and shell are from a 32. Not sure where he found the fan shroud and the electric fan is from a Dodge Intrepid. The alternator bracket is from a 74 Olds 442. (normally mounts on the other side) I finally had a minute to work on the steering linkage again. Dad cleaned everything up with a file and we put it all in place. As you can see, we're still working on the wiring. Just a few wires left on the inside.... More to come..........
My wake up call this morning Spent the rest of the day getting the engine compartment plumbed and wired........
Had an issue with the 'corrected' distributor cap. They work great if the firing order goes in a clockwise direction. The big Olds turns the wrong way so we had to start over. I wasn't crazy about using the yellow Accel wires but it was all we had at the shop at time. Any opinions?
Yes I've been down the correct a cap on an Olds can use it on a normal rotation but not the backwards rotation of an Ols engine. The project is looking GOOD!
Still moving forward. Changed the carburetor this morning. Decided the brakes were next. Getting them plummed went surprisingly well. Worked on getting the seats mounted and ran out of time. What's next..........
We need to paint the fenders and get them bolted on first..... then the test drive..... Yeah.... they had to go.....
cool build, for kicks when you see your pop, you can show him my Hup. It's an all original '27...I bought it at the estate sale (1st pix) I put it back together (yes found all the parts) buffed it out and go....The house and garage where I found it, it's now on the historical register
Well I'm sure once Dad drives that beauty around the block you won't be able to pull the smile off his face with a locomotive! If it's got a full tank of fuel he may not come back!
He loved it. I think you're right Joe. And it's getting really close. This will be the last pic of it with the battery on the floor, hooked up to life support. I remember when I was a kid, reading through one of Dads hot rod magazines, I ran across an article about wiring. Here is an example of what I thought was cool. The horn brackets will be covered by a splash pan so we'll come back later and touch them up.
Sheesh! I turn my back for just a minute, and he's on the phone again. Dam kids .... I took a few more pics than normal today to see if the photoshop guys can give us a hand. I'd kinda like to see what it would look like with a set of American Racing Torq-Thrust wheels and a wider white wall.
The hood just didn't look right. the radiator was just a bit high. Here is a before shot... And after I dropped it almost 2 inches...
Got the new radiator brackets finished and in place. While I was under there, I didn't like the way the tie rods looked. I completely disassembled the mount for the rack and pinion and had Dad modify it to fit right. The fenders were close enough for a coat of primer and time is running out so it was another late night.... Before With 3 coats of primer/sealer Before I start block sanding, I put on a guide coat. The guide coat is a different color than the primer and helps show the imperfections while you are sanding. Picked out a satin finish silver to see how it would look 2 tone. It was late but I couldn't help myself, had to untape it and move it to a bigger room so we could stand back and get a good look.
Hey Brian, here are a couple of photoshops, one with the mags and whitewalls that you requested, as well as another without whitewalls for comparison. Hope they help with your wheel and tire decisions. Btw I really dig the two tone paint scheme. Eli [/IMG] [/IMG]
Nice! Thank you Eli. I wish I had your photoshop skills. I had a concern about the lack of travel in the front end so we took it all apart to clean and lube everything. We replaced the springs and decided to get a different set of shocks. Going to try and finish the wiring today. Wait till you see the cool tail lights he has picked out.....
Thanks JFK, Dad helped me bend some sheet metal for the transmission tunnel. I had a minute to start getting it sealed before I hit the paint room. Shot the windshield frame..... This pic is for Gordy. Thanks for the donation my friend. Dad held the emblems on every inch of the car before he told me "right there" I snapped a few more pics on my way home. Thought I'd share. Yes that's a Model A being built in the shadows.
Hey Brian, Here's your dads car with spider caps and larger whitewalls as you requested. I think I'm getting better at "drawing" whitewalls. [/IMG]
Thank you Eli. You have been a great help on deciding on a wheel and tire combo. Our list of things to do is getting shorter. We started getting the interior back together. Looks like my security guard is sleeping on the job....
You ever have one of them days, no matter how hard you try, nothing seems to go right? Somehow, I still managed to make some progress. Got the interior a bit closer. Only 6 days left......
I agree Eli. I enjoyed your 3 P's idea. I live on make your next day better then the last. You need a day like that to focus on what you are doing. Keep in mind the car is ready for a test drive but we held off. It was tempting to jump in and go when Dad said we should go over and leave a 600 foot black mark in Brother John's new circle drive. Or did I say that? Lol. Dad and I have talked for hours on how he wants everything. I think this is what he said on the valve covers.... Red helped with Frankenstein to keep things covered if it rains. Freebie all patched up... 5 days....
