Will Smithys drone if you stick them on a 6 cyl (Ford 200 cid) with dual exhaust and 3 into 1 headers? I've also heard of people running two different mufflers (different on each side to keep the exhaust from droning at highway speed. Anyone heard this? Any ideas?

Not sure about Smithy's on a 6... but i've got an International Harvester (same as a Ford I think) tractor muffler on the flatty 6 in my Willys pickup. It sounds BAD ***. Very nice gurgling at idle, and when you open it up, it really sounds like you've got something. It doesn't sound like a stupid Honda with a fart can either. It has a nice old fashioned sound to it. With 2 inch pipe from the manifold back to a side exit before the p***enger rear wheel... it scavenges really cool between shifts and when you rev it. I'm hoping to have a soundclip up soon... as soon as I can mooch a camera off someone...

I've for one on my 200ci Falcon with the tailpipe coming out just ahead of the rear tire and I love the way it sounds. Not too loud. I couldn't hear it running with the stock exhaust set up.

    What about Porters?
http://www.portermufflers.com/ -has anyone had them? I'm thinking about a set for my '56 YBlock, can't see too much difference between them and Smithy's. Always ran Thrush years ago but Porters seem to sound pretty good . And they're USA made.

From what Ive studied and discussed , placement is key. 22 in muffler placed as far forward as possible will provide the best sound, but its all relative

Do they still make those gawd awful cheap as hell Thrush mufflers? I used to use them all the time since they were dirt cheap and sounded so rude.

  10. Have a set on my 47 ford 350 chev. Awesome nostalgic sound when ya get on it, but kinda quiet otherwise.

On my 64 impala, I have the Purple Hornies. 283 with duals, small pipes, no H-pipe. Much louder which I like, good pop to it.

I glad to hear that they are still a quality prouduct, same as they used to make.

I put them on my 235 when it was stock in the early 90's sounded great.
When I put the hot 235 in there it was actually a little quieter, I don't know why, but it still sets off car alarms:D

Fentons, with 2 inch from the headers out the back. I think I put the louvers facing the back. It was a long time ago.

Normal driving is an accepable noise level, but full throttle, holy **** it sounds good. Really good sound comes back at ya when going under overp***es on the highway at speed. Rolling Thunder!

I had a 26" Smithy single 2" in/out installed on my '59 Belair 235 this afternoon. I had it installed with louver openings facing the engine. It's a little bit more subtle than I was expecting, but I hear it may liven up as the miles go by. If not I'm not to worried as this is a daily driver and I don't want to deal with loud exhaust all day everyday. I most certainly did not want any rap or snap on decel. It does have an old school kind of sound to it. It makes it sound like the car runs better. The previous muffler was almost silent and full of sooty water that stained my driveway and shop floor every time I started it up. If and when I decide to go with a Fenton dual manifold my plan will probably be to run a shorter Smithy on the other pipe to give it a dual tone sound as I have heard this works well.

By comparison I have some 20" bombs 2.5" in/out on my '54 pickup behind a 350 with ****** block huggers that dump right behind the cab and they are all together quite obnoxious (but in a good way) I don't drive the truck nearly as much so it's OK, but if I did I would have to make a change there as they are really loud and probably get old quick.
