Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by xxwelderxx, Mar 3, 2007.

  1. I made it out of a 3"x2"x1" piece of solid alluminum. Did the work on a Bridgeport. Im gunna try my hand at a fuel log next. Sorry the pictures arent the greatest.

Hell Ya! At least "you" did it. Round the edges with a angle grinder and polish it if you want it to look more traditional. I like it!

  8. Thanks!!

What would be the best fittings to use? br*** or SS?

  9. Personally I don't see a problem with using billet. Every good forged axle, forged crank, or forged piston starts from a billet. If you make it yourself by hand or with the use of equipment for your own ride then more power to you. A billet is a chunk of ferrous or non-ferrous metal that is used in the formation of a machined or forged part. I think you did a great job. Plenty of guys back in the day would have used billet to make parts if it and the equipment was as readily available as it is today. Good Work, I'd run it.

Ignore the "billet" bashing. Ya did ok. Like Fergenboy says, round the edges and corners, and maybe even mill slots all the way around with a round-nose, 1/8" bit. Make it look cast. Polish it if you want, personally, I'd blast it and call it good.

    Don't use steel fittings, steel+aluminum=corrosion

As the others have said, knock the edges down and the vintage will come out.

    Just don't anodize it purple..........

nice little craft project BTW, looks good.

I think the suggestion about round edge slots is on the money. Such a project is on my to do list.

And there is nothing wrong with spending two days on a part you can buy for 25 bucks :D. I have done it many times.

  15. I made one just like that in my high school machine shop cl***....50 years ago ! It looks traditional to me. :D

If you do one again mill fins in it. round the corners then sand blast the fins. It rounds the fins and makes it look like a cast piece. I have seen a bike that the guy rounded every billet part this way even the wheels. I thought he had a set of wheels cast for the bike but they were really blasted billet

    It came out nice.
I agree with rounding the corners, at the top of the 'block' and also the edges of the base around the bolt holes.
It looks like a one piece version of some of the ones I have collected.
    Job well done!!

  18. I agree to round the corners. Then blast it with the most course material you can find.Top it off with br*** fittings. You might also want to stamp your name in it before you blast it for a one off type of deal. Then wait to see if your friends ask you where you got it! My 2 cents.

I almost ****ped myself at this. anyways, i think it looks decent, i agree that a little time making it more visually appealing wouldn't hurt.

you made it yourself, therefore, if it works, its automatically cooler. and if it doesn't, blame someone else

I agree with the comments that you made it yourself. Looks good. Keep trying and knock it around a bit to lose some of that "newness" look.

    Good work, squire!

Pretty cool there............. I also agree with the "rounded corner gang".

I can't help but wonder, if you made some to look like Chevy Bowties, might sell some? Or Ford Ovals? Mopar Pentastars?
or fin the top, round it to exactly match Cal Custom valve covers!

Anything that you make yourself is always cool!!! That goes for houses, boats, kids, and hot rods!!KEEP IT UP!!!

  24. Why buy it when you can make it. A man after my own heart. BTW, the term billet is extremely overused and miss-used.

you looked that up in the dictionary did'nt you??? ;) :D

  27. Looks cool.. nice work..

I would personally round off the edge and then run a 1/8" mill for a few p***es down the center to give it a finned look...

    Bridgeports rule don't they.

  28. Ok here are some finished pieces....what you think? First one is the rough one after I rounded the edges and the second one is a 5" x 1" piece of alum., but I also used the laser at work and etched my last name into the piece. I still have to weld on brackets on the log looking one.

    What ya think?

I was going to suggest machining your name (or something smart***)into it. Why buy it when you can make it. Over the years I have made more of my own parts than buying them, because I am usually broke and always cheap. It is amazing what you can learn by taking a big chunk of metal and turning it into a small usable part and alot of shavings on the floor. By the way, most of the parts I made along the way didnt look near as good as what have there.
