Features my first custom...'49 ford tudor

I'm glad to see you getting back to business on the Shoebox. I wondered what happened to you. Keeping busy, I see.

 

My '49 Tudor in 1957, ran a 3/4 race flathead, cost me $500 bucks for all machine work & speed parts!---Then another $300 for the neat paint job!
In 1957 this was a lots of money, especially married & 2 kids!

Looking at your first pix----Someone must have added a Ford emblem on the hood front, or its a '50 hood. 1949 hoods had the letters F-O-R-D at that spot.--------Don

 

re-prepped firewall, brushed on Eastwood fast etch.....leaves a coating of zinc phosphate behind, great for killing rust......wipe it all down with laquer thinner ....next Eastwood epoxy primer 1:1, I like simple.........next primer up and decide on a paint color.......

 

got a Bronco rear sump pan, pickup and dip stick.......got it installed today......just need to fashion a wooden dowel to plug in the block dip stick hole........

 

got my fill of ozone depleting inhalants today.....did the rattle can sandable primer over the epoxy.....next paint......

 

well I picked out a color for the custom and was all set to paint the firewall....then I decided I might as well paint the top of the cowl...then I decided I might as well paint the interior side of the firewall........then I noticed all the rust in the interior of the car and decided to deal with that first so the paint over spray will land on a paint prepared surface.....I removed the hard felt like material from around the doors and windows, wire brushed it and cut the tabs off.......the window mechanisms are rusted so they won't budge.....heat and PB blaster will get them working again.....

 

removed almost all the old undercoating and seam sealer....a hamb guy turned me on to this nifty Harbor Freight tool, good for removing undercoating..you know the drill, torch, putty knife, old gas, and wire wheel......almost ready for Eastwood's,Fast Etch...then epoxy primer

 

The 49 is coming along very nice. What color are you going to paint it?

 

seamist green is the color I chose for the custom.....

I put the zinc phosphate to her.....looks like hell,but it kills and prevents further rust.......now just wipe her down with acetone and wire brush and scuffy pad it to smooth it out.....then epoxy primer.....and you'll never know the difference.............

 

well she's all poisoned.....epoxy primer.....

 

got the firewall done....used the two stage process, base-clear......did the flat finish clear from eastwood....I like the no or low shine look.....this clear lays down nicely and holds on to the panels nicely.......Oh yea, the color is '49 ford seamist green........

 

well I noticed she's a little dusty......got the 351w, c-4 set in the car.....
next measure for the drive shaft........

 

got her all sanded ....now putting the Eastwood Fast Etch to her......

 

got her sanded down, next wipe her down with lacquer thinner.....

 

lucky car. got a rebirth most shoeboxes only dream of.

Good ole battery box rot....looks good so far. Been there done that.

 

thanks for the encouragement....... my 5 easy steps to preserving inner fenders.....
Eastwood "fast etch", then wire brushing, then wipe down with lacquer thinner, then coat with por-15..... lastly, top coat with spray can black rustproof paint.....

 

Coming along nice The flathead is a great motor. Doing the front end first is a good Idea. I'm going the have to rebuild the front end on my Falcon and change the steering box out. Tudor sedans are awsome.

You are doing some really good work on it. Cant wait to see the progress. Im learning alot about metal prep i will be using on my car.

 

this is one of those times that I don't know where I'm going with this, but I'll know when I get there.....so here she goes......
