I just bought this 1962 Dodge Custom 880. I've already driven it every day since I bought it with little problem. She needs a little TLC, but I spent 1500 and now have a gorgeous car I can drive every day. Not a bad deal. I know in 62 the 880 was a mash up of a Chrystler Newport and left over Dodge Dart parts as Dodge tried to recover from the downsizing of all its cars. There weren't a lot made, and for 63 they had a less stylish squared nose to catch up with most of the other cars of the time. I'm glad I found this car since, to me, it's style is unique for it's time. I've already started putting together the build in my head and it is going to be mean. A long, low cruiser with enough power to drive like an a$$hole when I want to. If anyone has any pictures of these built or info on this car please let me know! Thanks, Chris
Very cool - the early 60's Dodges still had some of that Virgil Exner influence, which makes the styling wild in my eyes. For the money can't beat it - though some will 'flame' you - just have fun and enjoy. You might want to do an intro up above - that will save you from getting picked on at some point. Have a great time, and welcome to the world of Customs
Thanks guys! I figured I'd end up catching some flamage for the car since its not something many people seem to work with, especially since it's a sedan. I love it though and when it's finished it will at least demand some respect wether you like it or not.
drive the snot out of it and enjoy every minute of it. i bought a '63 300 4dr hardtop with 383 and pushbutton tranny way back in '87 and my wife and i drove that big mama everywhere... pulled the engine and trans and put them into a '57 Dodge Lancer a couple of years later when the 300 wouldn't pass Va inspection.... put some scallops on it or a set of pinstriping, or maybe a Watson-style panel paint job....
I've never seen one with the 61 Dart/Polara front sheetmetal. are you sure it came that way from the factory? here's my white 61, and my friends red 62. these are both Darts.
When I first sat it from the front I thought it was a 61 Dart, which I love. When I saw it had the 4 doors and that smooth tail I was nearly giddy. I don't know why I always wanted a 4 door but whatever. After the guy told me what it was and I did some research, there was no way I wasn't buying it. From what I've figured out, the square noses came out once Dodge had time to set up an assy line and weren't jumbling them together to have a big car. As of right now, for paint I want to spray it heavy flake green with highlights faded along the trim and body lines. I want to spray the roof a heavy flake white, too. Suicide rear doors and white and green for the interior. I want to set it as low as I can stand to drive it (probably about 3.5" off the ground, that's where my last car was) on some Rocket "Strike" or similar wheels with 3/4 in white walls. Warm over the engine a little bit and generally clean everything up. Like I said, I've thought just a little bit about it in the last couple days. It is my daily driver, so I would like to get everything working 100% then make it pretty. Oh, and I want to figure out how to fill the grill with drawer knobs and keep the curve.
Got a picture of a 4-dr Dodge Senica(sp) with a slant six in it... What years were those made in???..
