Technical My First Ford tell me about it please (1927 )

Very new to old Fords, i'll be having some questions for sure. I need to positively ID the brakes and many other things so I can start working on it. This was sitting since 19 68 ? ( I'm in NW Washington State )

Nice. You might want to add at least your general location. That way other HAMB'rs near you might be able to offer****istance, advice, or maybe just a cold beer.

I see a V8 Sixty engine, the front axle looks to be ‘46-‘48
and I expect the brakes are ‘46 and up too, the brake adjustment on those is different than the earlier Ford hydraulics. Not sure looking at the photo but is that body fiberglass? Not that there’s anything wrong with that, just curious.

 

It looks like it might be glass, but I can't tell for sure. V8-60. Late hyd brakes. Nice car!

 

The PO 'thinks' it's a modified 47 or 49 frame.... I'll be posting more pics, and bugging him and ypou guys for more info so I get the right parts. He also says its an 'air cooled 60' which makes no sense. I think the fan went missing and he got very lucky it did not blow up... It does have shielding around the engine and aluminum intake and heads. I did some reading and the shields are from a one year only engine. I have a short parts list but there is always more. It was a Canadian Ford, the radiator says made in Canada, and he brought it to the US years ago. It looks to be all steel. I hate those fenders. What looks good on there?

I'm no V8-60 expert he might mean it's a tin side 60 which is one year only IIRC.

I think they are all on the right track with the answers I’ve seen but it sure is cool looking. Can’t wait to see more!

 

It’s a 26-27 touring with the portion behind the front seat removed. If that’s a 49-ish frame it must be the rails from a truck, and they were highly modified. Engine is a 60 horse, not air cooled, and from what I can see it has finned heads and something weird going on with the lower water outlets. If they are coming out the sides of the block it was probably an engine built for a sprint car.

Make sure to get us more good pictures when you can and we will help with more details.

What a cool hot rod. Many of us in western Washington. Hitchhiker is up just north of Mount Vernon, good source for vintage Ford parts.

I know I need wheel cylinders, hoses and need to ID the master cyl, it is from some other make and says BRK for one resevoir and Clutch for the other one. Probably needs water pumps. The trucks had more impellers, yes? Will those work on an early 60 ? I****ume those carbs are 92's and probably need kits.

I don't have a good pic of the water outlets, but it looks like they come from the front of the block.

60 water pumps are a whole different animal.

 

So I have to ID the block to figure out the year of the water pump. ? Thanks A quick Ebay search brings up hardly anything. Where might to numbers be on these engines for ID /year? Thanks

 

Very cool find! Can’t wait to see more of it so we can get a better overall view. Very cool that it has a V8 60! I kinda dig the fenders mainly since they have been on it forever.

And, please hit “full image” when you post pics. Makes them much easier to see.

 

I'm just learning the Hamb format. First time post, and first Ford in my garage ! It was just too cool and it was priced right. Thanks for fixing my picture guthriesmith I want to put those fenders in a bead roller, or the scrap bin. I can do better. It deserves it. I do understand this was a late 1950's build so they just used what they found. It has a JC WHitney bikini top too. Ugly, but functional.

If you look real close at the headlights, they have a 12V sealed beam bulb in there, and a turn signal bulb off to the side. I can;t wait to pull it out of there. I wonder if the tailgate has the cool Ford cursive script ? I have not even seen the whole car yet. The wait is just brutal

 

Brakes are from '39 to '48 (wheels are '40-'48 bolt pattern). Post a picture of the 6 o'clock position of the backing plates and you will get a response as to pre or post war. DON'T step on the brakes. If the cylinders are rusty you will jam them on and make it difficult to remove the drums. If the rear axle get the proper puller for the drums, it is easy to cause a lot of expensive damage without the correct puller.

Thanks, and we know not to push the brake . I'll post pics when I get it out of there. It has what looks like a differential split down the sides. Is that an oldie or a 49? I am very into Studebakers, so I have an OTC drum puller for tapered axles if that is what it needs

Spend some time on here looking at what makes this place tick. This place loves old hot rod finds exactly like the car you found. Don't rush to make any changes. Some crudeness is ok..its part of the charm and is indicative of when it was built. That car has been that way for an awfully long time...60+ years perhaps? It looks fairly well built..has a lot of cool touches. I just don't want you to make an irreversible change that you regret later. Probably has a set of Ansen swing pedals. Master cylinder is 1960-63 Chevy truck..

 

Thanks for the input. My brother said the same thing. The car is a time capsule , built how it was, so I'm starting to get it- that I should probably leave it that way. I do think the fenders look OK, but 'rushed' and do not match the rest of the 'build'. No idea why the whole frame and suspension is Red, but I want to make it Black. Again, everyone says "Don't " !

 

Old paint is special. If you get the car running and drive it to a show, a crowd will form. They will KNOW that it is an old build and has been stored well and cared for, for a long time. Any new paint and it'll lose character in my opinion. It'll look like you built it. I recently bought a '38 Chevy coupe that's been a hot rod since about 1957. It has old paint too...but its been sanded on..there's filler visible and the fenders are a different color. I wish the paint was like your T. Your car is all one color and looks like it'll clean up well.

 

Fenders incidentally were to comply with the law. They may have been "rushed" although the front ones look pretty cool. The original builder might have been bombing around in it no fenders and got a ticket.

 

I reread your post and see you're just talking about painting the frame and suspension? My '38 has a blue body and a red firewall. Looks to have been that way a loooong time. Guys did offbeat things back then to have their cars stand out.

 

Those front fenders are made from 36 Ford spare tire covers, cut in half. A very classic way to make small fenders back in the day.

The water pumps for 60’s were kinda year specific. Built from 37 through 40, you will need to know what you have before you buy fresh pumps.
