My First Hemi

  1. Congrats, good find. Looking at the pics, the water pump bolt holes look too close to the top of the block to be a '92. But you never know. The last IND that I had had no numbers on the usual place on the top, only on the plate riveted to the block.

    Scootermcrad, That. Was. Awesome! Now I really wont sleep. I have a GM 6-71 blower that is date coded February 1969, still painted green and turns free as can be. Maybe I need to go big on this one. Like I told mama, a chance like this wont come around very often.
     
  3. I have some engines just like the one you pictured. Two of them are IND56 engines (331 cubic inch engines) even though the block casting number is the one used for a 354 cubic inch engine. I was able to read the block casting number without removing the intake manifold. The blocks are the short bellhousing version with a round SAE bellhousing adapter bolted onto the back to accept the clutch housing.

    All of the variations and different combinations out there make much more sense when you think about mass production. The factory used what they had on hand to meet production requirements. In other words, later engines (say 1957 or 1958) very well could have some 392 parts on them as that was in full production for the car line. The exhaust manifolds, water crossover and water pump are all interchangeable between 331/354/392, so they could have used them. Again, the factory was primarily concerned with production numbers, not being consistent on which size engines got which parts.

    Forget about it being a 392 industrial engine, Chrysler did not make any. But a creative farmer could have used a 331/354/392 from a wrecked car because it would bolt right in.

    Beware of cracked water jackets. If the water was not drained out completely before being exposed to freezing temperatures, it may have blown out water jackets in the vicinity of the side core plugs.

    I wasnt able to find a casting number on the block, but it was cold and snowing so I didnt spend a lot of time, especially since the ID plate was still readable. It is marked:

    IND56A 236 15097

    I cant wait to get it home.
