I have done some Kustom stuff and some newer stuff but this is my first Hot Rod. And Blame it on you guys and some new friends I meet in the last 2yrs. Not my dream car by any means but a starting point. I will get some good experiance with this one. drive it and then sell it.

Model A sedan body (4 pieces) bought for a good deal from a guy who had to have some NOVA?

Rear end out of a LTD bought as a package deal with a 28 hudson coupe.

frame 28 hudson (Will be making a new one for that project.)

    68 gmc truck 350 with 3spd

Traded some jeep tailights for a late 30's ford front axle that was in a henry J.

I will be using the 3-link setup just reworked to fit this car with coil springs. about a 6in. channel and a 4in chop. With ***us' help i hope to have a nice front end setup. I started about 2 weeks ago and things are coming right along

looks like your having fun! do alittle something extra with those motor mounts. at the very lest box in just that section of the frame. stress cracks should show up in no time.

I'll second the motor mounts. Unless your frame is perfectly rigid your going to have trouble with the mount bolts loosing up and worse a cracked block. I suggest you incorporate some sort of rubber mount, preferably a stock chevy engine mount.

I agree with the mounts needing help.
You're gonna feel all the vibrations from the engine and the engine will feel the vibration from the road. Neither is good.

Thanks Guys. I made the mounts to except the factory rubber mounts but i didnt have long enough bolts last night to put those in. This frame is a tank but i had my suspisions about not boxing it under the mount. I think i will just do it. I wanted something alittle differant for the mounts. How do you like there look? are they to street rod?

its getting there, now you just have to get ahold of some smaller front tires, 5-60 15's will do!

Have you ever broken a Chevy small block by using as a stressed member in the frame? (Honest question)

IMCA modifieds and fabricated stub Late Models pretty much universally use the block as a stressed member via the front side mounts and a rear mid-plate between the block and the bell-housing. In the ten or so years I've never around them, I've never once seen a block broken because of that. They do grenade on occasion, but that's not the motor mount's fault. ;) :D

Just wondering if you had first hand experience with them breaking like that, and if so, what's the major difference that would let these race cars get away with it (flying through the air and whatnot), but a street car can't. I guess it could be that the race cars are inherently more stiff. Hmmmm . . . .

And I'm not trying to start a ******* contest or anything like that, I genuinely am curious about this ('cause I'm thinking of using a mid-plate and solid mounts on my current build ).

To the OP: Nice looking start you got there. That Hudson frame IS a beast, ain't it? Looks like it came out of a semi-truck. Cool looking though . . . . .

    from nowhere...

    My question exactly...

If they take that abuse, how will the fail instantly on a typical street hot rod, i.e...: Light/moderate power/limited traction.
again, looking for ACTUAL evidence...not a "I knew a guy...' story.
has it happened to anyone in practice?
I have solid mounts on my model A. I have had no problems whatsoever, thus far. I DO, however, have a boxed frame, and a bar in the car, though...

Chop top 10-4. I might have to run it solid mount and see what happens besides whats a SBC worth? I have 3 that were free. I have alot of projects so i dont think i will like it to much to not want to sell it? or sell something else? I have alot of ideas in my mind and as long as i keep something around to cruise i will be okay!

Neat car and good start. Personally I really like the Hudson frame, different and great shape and looks plenty strong, and I agree with Slam, it needs 4-5 inches out of the top minimum.

The deal with the motor mount is the sideway pressure from the weight of the engine will tend to twist to the outside, your frame is supporting the weight across the top instead of along the side..That is a stout looking frame though.Maybe just a gusset running under your mount down the inside of the frame rails, welded to your motor mount and the boxing plates.

hes a bit reluctant but hes gonna box the frame.

were gonna mount the steering box to the inside of the frame so it needs to be boxed.

one thing you can see about his motor mounts are that the round tube doesnt just weld to the top of the frame it acutally runs throu the frame and weldes to the inside of the sides of the frame rails.
