It was 1965, I was 16. I put this together over a couple years, as a meager, but resourceful kid, starting with the T body given to me by my brother Tom. My plan was to go Drag Racing, as I did, but but not with this machine. Total out of pocket cost, was less than 50 bucks !
Thanks to my nephew Ken, who salvaged the footage and did the video.

I remember those days Marty. I can’t say I ever bought an engine for $5.00 but yes, prices have sure escalated.

Too cool for school . Love the little dance around checking the vitals on the test drive , don’t ya just love the techno kids that can save this valuable footage. Open zoomies musta sounded like 100 mph to a 16 yr old.

Thanks for all the wonderful replies, it’s fun to remember the struggle of putting that car together, compared to today. My internet is down, when it gets back up, I will show the Flathead I had for it.

I think you need to rotate that shifter 180 degrees -- every time you shift outta 1st it's going into reverse. Keep us posted . . .

Pretty cool Marty. I don't have any pictures of the early cars I built. I guess I never thought I would care later, I was wrong.

That first car is always the most fun I fortunately still have mine though it doesn’t currently run but it’s on the list to get running again soon and my first one was a model t as well though it was a coupe not a roadster thanks for the history lesson

You are making those of us without video coverage of our first car envious. Guess I will have to settle for going into the garage.

Great video Marty! bizio2 (2).jpg Here's one I'm pretty sure I've posted before, took this one during the old days of nostalgia racing at Seattle. Man do the years fly by!

Thank you, I was just lucky that my brother Tom had traded for an 8mm movie camera, and happened to be home that day. I mentioned earlier that I had a Flathead to use, along with an open drive 40's pickup transmission. There was a guy in a town 6 miles away that had an Edelbrock SU 459 intake with 94's. He wanted to trade it for a tonneau cover for his pickup, and wouldn't sell it outright. So, I sold my bicycle for 10 bucks, bought a white cover from another guy in town. I wasn't old enough to drive, so my mother drove me to make the trade. With that intake on the dresser in my bedroom, I slowly found Offy heads, a 1007B Iky grind camshaft, and built some motor mounts and a scatter shield in shop class. I stewed over how to engineer clutch linkage and pedals, and about that time, my stepdad Jack gave me his well worn 53 Cadillac 4 door. So I decided to make things easy, and use the 331 Cad and Hydro. Did anyone notice, I only had straight header pipes on the driver side in the video, and a stock manifold on the p-side ? Here are some shots of the Flathead, and the first set of headers I built, using some rusty tailpipes I found behind a gas station. Thanks for all the comments my HAMB friends, I enjoyed sharing this episode from my youth ![ ATT !ACH=full]5734996[/ATTACH] 2012-07-19 105309.jpg 2012-07-19 113420.jpg 2012-08-31 114836.jpg
