  1. Same here. The darker green kinda "lowers" that unchopped roofline a little too. Way to go guys! This is gonna be awesome...

  2. I'm voting for this one as well. This is an awesome thread, and I can't wait to see the spreadsheet of the buy/sell breakdown!

I have always had to sell stuff to move to the next step but you have taken it to a new level. Keep up the good work

Thanks for all the kind words everybody.

Just wanted to mention, in the spirit of the new HAMB changes, that this car will be period correct in every way, including drivetrain and interior components. Currently uses nothing newer than 1955 and should stay that way through to the end.

Great thread! Wish I would have read it before I used the money for bills on all my rod parts.

This version looks the best by far.
Would look even better with a nice stance.

  17. I am curious about the Snow-Seal white wall technique.....

There has been some progress, a 12 volt conversion with an alternator is being finished up (not real trad I guess, but very useful when the original stuff doesn't work) and fall Jefferson provided another bounty of resale items to fund the paint job. We also made a deal with a friend of ours to use a paint booth and should be working on some body work hopefully later on today. I'll try to get some more pics and such later on.

  19. I quickly threw together a few other color options
first two have a little more blue in the dark green..
the next is a bit more emerald
and the last is a three-tone for fun. First one is my fav of the bunch along with the first one you showed, with the seafoam on top

I like the darker green on top also. Ever think about chopping the top?

That's a really cool story. A testimony to ingenuity and determination.

The first thing that came to my mind when I saw your chrome placement was a '69 Buick Skylark, no doubt because they were common when I was a kid. Most were solid in color but a few were 2 tone and the light color was typically on the bottom and the darker on the top. The skylark styling was a throwback to the 56 buick styled by GM exec. Bill Mitchell. His car was two tone blue and the coolest feature in my opinion was the side exit exhaust pipes just in front of the rear wheels. I think the light top, dark hood /trunk /side/ down to the chrome and then light belowthe chrome would be killer. It would stretch the car and minimize the height of the roof while keeping some classic paint lines. Here is a few examples of 2 tones and a pic of Bill Mitchells 1956X buick. check out those side pipes, would look awesome on a taildragger with skirts.

It drove down the road today! Only made it 3 blocks but the brakes work good, engine wiring is together, and we got a start on the bodywork as well. Will hopefully have some new pics to add soon.

"we made some wide whitewalls using my infamous Snow-Seal method."

    Searched "Snow Seal"

"For future reference, that white wall tire paint is trailer roof coating put into a different can with a huge markup. I use the same stuff, a half gallon was $11. Some guys refer to it as Snow-Seal but my brand name was Sealbest white elastomeric roof coating.

Works great, and like you said, if it's prepped really well (that's the key) it holds up nicely for a long time. Have one set that must be close to 5 years old already, still looking nice.

A lot of naysayers will tell you how much better a bias type tire looks, which is kind of true, but you can get good results for way less money doing it this way. I think it's a real good option."
"Grinding sidewalls works nice, I've also had good luck painting wide whitewalls onto the sides of regular tires with snow seal, the white elastomeric trailer roof coating. I've heard people talk about using Krylon Fusion too, but I tried that and it didn't hold up for shit for me."
"Snow-Seal. I've been using it for years. The brand I get is Seal-Best white elastomeric roof coating. Sand the lettering off of your sidewall for a smooth look if you want to really make them nice, with the wheel off of the car, brush on about 4 coats, with some dry time in between each one. You'll want to super clean the tires with lacquer thinner beforehand, if you don't get all the brown mold-release off the tires they'll brown out after a while. Pick a tire that has a line that you can paint up to, makes it easier, I usually just widen out narrow whitewalls and paint up to the outer edge of the whitewall. A friend of mine just did a set for his '55 Buick at my shop, I walked him through it and they turned out great. Takes longer than an hour for the whole car but they do look nice and don't chip or crack off like paint does."

That Jeep toy was made right here in Minnesota, about 20 minutes from me.

Great idea! I buy and sell to get what I want. My lady has never complained!
