I'm sure Tommy is grinning from ear to ear right now...I remember the day he "took" on my old '40 Stude...I thot for sure I had the race won...but he was just playing me...

Hold onto that car and keep his memories close to you...and congrats on the cover...

Henry J from Georgia, originally Missouri. AND yes my dad was a hell of a great guy to be around. Never met a stranger, or a car that he didn't think had potential. Even if it was a basket case , he understood everybody's idea of a hot rod was in their mind, not what was in their wallet or what others thought of it!!

Nice! I like that you still have the car. A tribute to your Dad. Perhaps someday it can be p***ed down to your children.
I have not bothered getting CKD recently, but I will look for this issue.

    Timmy,

I saw (and grabbed) the mag in the store this weekend. As the teenaged guy was bagging the groceries he stopped to look at the magazine. I saw him looking and couldn't help myself from telling him that the Henry J he was looking at was built nearly 50 years ago about 10 miles due east of where we were standing. The teenaged lady running the cash register smiled and said something like "he doesn't know what a Henry J is; he's looking at the girl." He got it back out of the bag, looked at the car, and said "oh, yeah, cool car" or something like that. He had no clue what he was looking at other than the babe.

I couldn't wait to get home to read the article inside.

I brought the mag to work with me today and did a search to see if there was a thread about it. If you hadn't started this I would have.

And I 2nd what Tman said: we still miss Joplin and Weekender. I don't know whether GOD allows folks to see down here but if He does Tommy is beaming right now.

Hope to see you and the J in August, as do lots of folks on here. B-t-w; I did go by Tommy's grave on the anniversary of the day he died. I know if you'd have been in Missouri you'd have been there, too.

For all of you besides Timmy: each summer I stop by the cemetery where Tommy is and visit him a couple of times. It's sort of on my way home from work. I usually take two Pepsi's and a pack of Hostess cupcakes (2/pk). I sit beside Tommy's grave; talk to him; and offer him a Pepsi and cupcake. He never says he wants it so I drink/eat it all myself. You all probably think that this doesn't sound quite right reading it here, but Tommy would get a chuckle out of it.

Very Well Said Atch, glad to call you a friend.

I am real sure that I've talked to Tommy back in the day and I do remember him being very positive and helpful about my Henry J build (still not started :p). I used to see the car and your Dad around Columbia MO area as well as other local shows around mid-missouri. Very inspiratoinal for sure! Congrats Timmy on getting the photo shoot your Dad always dreamed of. You've really made my day with this thread. The digital photo below was given to me by Atch and its one of the best drag photos I can imagine having in my posession.

quite possibly the most famous pic ever on the hamb. Joplin on our left and Weekender on our right. i was there when this pic was taken. i don't remember who won the race, but the image is, and will ever be, seared into my brain...

(wish i knew who to credit the pic with)

Atch, thanks for the visit,,,, I'll take you up on that Pepsi next trip to the BURG!!! When I went to receive the old car from the big Mo.four years ago, it had two things in it that are still in it as we speak ,,,,, The framed copy of the world record, and a framed copy of that picture of him and Jerry!!! He told me after Jerry p***ed, I have had this **** for years(cancer) and Jerry wasn't even sick, go figure!!!
He had the best time at that first drag. It made him happier than I had seen him in years. Just to line up with anyone, heads up , and have at it. No big money rides. No sponsors. No big crowds. Just some people who loved what they were doing and having fun doing it.

I have to thank Ryan for that!!!! Thats why I keep coming back!!!
