My Holley is whining...

I have no idea what this thing is doing. It is a Holley 750 vac. secondaries. The only way I can describe it is it sounds like its whining. Messing with the mixture screws can cange the pitch a little, but it seems to be pretty constant. If you just about starve the engine the noise goes away. Any ideas? I'm guessing its related to fuel flow. I think I have 70 jets in there right now.

O' you got one of those female carbs.... better take it back and ask for a male carb!

No seriously... have you taken the air cleaner off to see if it makes a difference in noise?
I had a cleaner that got full o' shat and made funny noises.
When I took the air filter off it stopped. Once I changed it out, it never did it again....

I thought vaccume too... but no it runs fine. I just swapped the jets to 72s for the hell of it, but no change.

  5. is it a whine or a wistle? could it be a vacumn leak around the base of the carb? i once had a PVC valve make a whiny nosie..drove me nuts, kept thinking it was a vacumn leak at the carb. or maybe the power valve?

Its defenatly a whine. Powervalve is very possible. I had quite the back fire out of it when I was putting the engine together. On the phone with Holley now. See if they know. [IMG]

  7. that's why i don't like holley's...one good backfire and the power valve is gone. Mr gasket and others does now offer some sort of power valve protector

  8. wouldn't a power valve make it run bad? i had one leak around the throttle shaft bushing once. it whisled really loud.

If all of the Holley people are as unhelpful as that guy was I'm going Edelbrock! That "tech support" guy didn't want to help at ALL. All I could drag out of him was something in the air passage. I don't think so though.

  10. yea 36 i'm not much on holleys either. i know a lot of people that have great luck with them, but i never did. they're great out of the box but once they start acting up i'm lost. i can fix afb's and quadrajets blind folded but never could figure out holleys

  11. edelbrock is my choice. i've 3 new ones and never a problem. and they seem to idle better. but that could be my imagination

He was right, but when they are a dick about it you tend not to want to listen to what they say.
But its all good now. [IMG]

And you didn't "disagree" with the vacuum leak possibility in the least? [IMG]

  17. i'm glad you got it fixed, even without the "help" from holley. i'm not a fan of holleys, and have used nothing but edelbrocks since they put them on the market.i'm happy with them now,but not with edelbrock corp. their tech assistance is as bad as they come too! when they first brought them out, there was a problem with the needle and seat causing severe flooding, but try to get them to tell you about it,or even admit it was impossible! they made changes to the needle and seat on later carbs, and just about told everybody with the early ones to get fucked...i was one, i had to buy the upgraded parts!
