I have always heard the time period for getting a bonded title was 3-6 months after the paper work was submitted. That why my 48's paper work will be submitted around Sept. Hopefully I will be able to drive it in the spring. Gene
I used to build and license custom Bikes here in Illinois. I feel your pain but once you know the process it gets easier other than the waiting. The Officers in the Belleville office that do the actual inspection and stamping the VIN in Southern Illinois are good guys and understand the Bike/Car hobby. Once I got to them it was a breeze.
THIS is why there will be no DMV in Heaven...and all the DMV trolls will be in Hell. P.S.- The DMV here in Calif. are all Nazi's, too!
Nope, they beat the numbers in with a 2 pound hammer into the frame. The guy uses these stamping dies that are 3/4" long. I threw up six times while he stamped my frame. watched the child being born, that was less of a horrifying site, full C section too. Then they rivet this tag on your door using Cuban rivets so that you can't fudge anything, right in your drivers door jamb. Then the guy takes another stamp that is 3/4" long and beats a mark into your door jamb and the tag, more vomiting occurred. The guy left his gun lying on the floor while he did mine, 2 or three more beatings of the stamp and I was going to unload it into my skull to numb the pain.
I saw that June of 08 bit there. Sorry. I started my process the same as you last year, about exactly the same time. Next step is the sec, of state police inspector. Mine came at about 9 weeks. He Either issued me temps or they came along soon after. In this system there are not that many people doing this. There is Debbie, and only Debbie The inspectors, for the entire state there are 3, North Central Southern, 3 thats it, the guy had like 700,000 miles on his cruiser. Then the plating, then the taxing. The inspectors get badly back logged with all sorts of theft stuff and trailer registrations, home builts etc.. That's what holds it up, once you get the inspection, you're golden. It's like going to the electric chair. If they make you sit there waiting for it long enough, finally you just say the heck with it just pull the darn switch already, you'll just about hop out of the chair on your own and pull the switch on yourself. I had a temp in Sept like the 15Th and platesOct 15 and a title by Nov 1. 6 months. It's a baby hotrod. whoopty.
This may sound like a dumb question, but if you were to sell your rod after going thru that lengthy process, would the buyer enjoy a simple title transfer and tax bill or would he have to get another inspection?
You can not sell your car for 3 years. After which point the next buyer should have an easy time registering the bonded title and vehicle in Illinois and I would hope any other state.
I'm okay with that because my car is still in rough paint. I planned on final painting last winter, but now I'm glad I didn't. Timeline started June 08, inspector just called and will be at my house August 18th for the beatings - I mean inspection and possible stamping. hope this goes well.
funny thing is no one really knew anything about him, till he ran for president. As much as state needs money, you would think it would be easier. Il cannot mow grass or pickup dead critters on road, they don't have money for gas.
I think that process would have been worse. Anything out of the norm for them is totally not understood. Actually, it makes no sense at all to bond a vehicle that started with no markings. How the hell is someone to claim it was theirs and stolen if the car was made by me from scratch? I have words for that, just WOW.
They would have to prove origin. Documented origin,which is why it is nice that now you own a vehicle with a documented origin yourself, you can now prove ownership and it makes the car more valuable as it is easier to sell and properly documented.
Update today. State investigator just left my house. He affixed a sheet metal plate to my frame rail and told me that a cardboard temporary liscense plate will me mailed to my house shortly. I then can drive it regularly, so I think this thing is finally over. The metal plates and title will be mailed to me in about 4 weeks. He told me in conversation that the Huge rash of pulling everything pre-48 is over. He told me "That program has been suspended". In my situation, I needed to have a VIN plate assigned to my car anyway. With the program that is designed to harass already registered cars over, the system may move faster along when I go to register another car now.
Good for you. I hope that its true about them easing up on this a bit. Im just about to refile for my title after they said the one I had was no good because I couldnt prove the vin (its a model A). It just about made me give up on the car all together. Glad to hear it worked out for you.
well guys..if dmw is hard for you..think about being from another contry then a friend bought a 66 pontiac from colorado..our swedish postoffice lost his letter on the way to get checked..so he needs a new title.....but since the org owner in colorado is dead its impossible.he must be the one applying for a lost title....the car has been parked for 2 years now...cant do nothing to it then looking on it in the garage poor guy...............regards stig
Thats true... BUT thats easily remedied with a COPY of the Bill of Sale. Word to the wise KEEP A COPY you will need it . The next car I transfer am going to put many, many copies of the BoS with it. along with a note stating maybe with several copies they may be able to not lose them all.
Glad its over for you. Went through BS since the seller of my car (in Indiana) never titled it to him and the original owner died in Minn years ago.
My Illinois Department of Revenue experience includes recently receiving a letter that states I owe the state $1500 for tax and penalities for registering my car, versus the $25 that the paperwork said I owe (based on the purchase price and age) at the time I visited the DMV. They apparently think my '51 Merc is pretty awesomely restored and worth more than $30,000. Truth is it hasn't been roadworthy for about 25 years, and it's missing an engine, trans, interior, glass, etc. Now I need to "protest their independent valuation" of my car. My reply will include pictures of the car at the time of purchase and hopefully these clowns will realize a #5 car purchased for less than $9,000 is not worth more than $30,000 - if that math makes any sense. I can hope, but I doubt the crooks here in Illinois will be able to summon the brainpower to also come to this conclusion.
Like Skirtless said, the Dept of Revenue is the masked marauder in this fiasco, not necessarily the Sec of State/DOT. And heed Russco's warning: KEEP THE ORIGINAL and send a COPY! However, I did finally receive my notice from them last week stating the issue had been resolved. They acknowledged my $25 payment and waived the additional $1500 + intererst and penalties. Such a nice gesture on their part, doncha think. FWIW, send a notarized Bill of Sale along with the RUT form DIRECTLY to the Dept of Revenue. (I filled out my RUT in BOLD RED INK with a LOT of !!!!!!!!s after the info. Maybe they got the point? Probably not.) GOOD LUCK!
YES!!! They gummed up the works a little while by telling me "I didn't send receipts for the engine and transmission". Wow, so they lost my originals I sent them - thanks. I made copies of everything I sent, so I had to make another copy to send them AGAIN.
I took the easy way out ,started with a clear title.I wasn`t exactly the truck I wanted but I hate DMV hassles.
I had good luck at the AZ dmv as well,.as long as papers were good and it passed saftey insp I was good to go. this was in the 80`s ...might be more of a hassle now.
To me all DMV of any state - Should be looking for a way to cheerfully receive your monies not how to - *not take it* !
To resolve this just send a COPY of the Bill of Sale with a copy of "The Letter" in to the Dept of Revenue it will take awhile but you will get a letter stating you are good. Its basically just a bluff they try to get poor saps to just pay it and I bet some probably do. Listening to all this makes me very happy I became an Illinois refugee back in the early 70's! And car stuff is just one of the issues! And to Ironpile, I recently brought a 49 Fleetline into AZ on a good FL title without a bit of hassle ... evidentally AZ no longer ever requires a VIN inspection when bringing in an out-of-state vehicle. I even did all my paperwork (title and plates received at the time) through a private dmv contractor where very few signs on the walls were in English. Barry
