becky and i decided we needed some time away, and i was dying to hit the road in the '54 and stretch its legs a bit, and enjoy some time behind the wheel. so, we packed it up with some camping gear and all my art, and hit the road.

    new art for the trip

i was trying not to smile too much so that i looked cool, but i just look like a tool.

we took some back roads to break up the trip a bit. but we crossed the hudson on 84

i offered to drop becky off here and pick her up on the way back, but she didn't like that idea for some reason... (does no one get this? it's sing sing...oh and did you know that's where the phrase "send you up the river" came from? getting sent to sing sing was 'getting sent up the river.') anyway...

on the advice of lowdug37, we took rt209 through the delaware water gap

and found ourselves at the friendly latimore valley fairgrounds

we set up camp and grilled some burgers...

and settled in for the night.

morning dawned, and we headed to the show.

megan's (chevygirlrox) roadster. i got to meet megan, and matt, and see denise (for the first time in 4 years) but only got about 5 minutes with them, cuz they were headed for the track, and i had to mind my spot.

lowdug37's truck. soooo cool. especially in person.

love this little car. you should see the way its owner drives it around that track...

a shot of the '54 on the infield grass in the afternoon.

then we headed home, taking a couple different roads...

yes, i looked inside. nuthin' there.

it was just the adventure i needed. 800 miles in the coupe is good for the soul. and i think even becky had a good time.

the only thing missing was tuck...:(

    Hey General and Becky,
You guys are a cool couple. It's folks like you that make the stuff so much fun. I'm the guy that tried to help you with your tarp. I hope to see again sometime. With an EZ up tent. Thanks for the art/picture.

Is your artwork a copy of an original flyer or sign from CT Dragway or something that you came up with on your own? I'm guessing they are for sale correct? Either PM me or please more details here.

it was great to meet ya - I was the guy that filmed your stuff - I will be sure to include the 2.3 seconds of footage when I do the segment on the show!

perhaps I can slow down the footage enough to actually make it 4.1 seconds!
    ha

hope ya'll had as good a time as I did - it was amazin'

Looks like you guys had a great time. You're so lucky to have a girl that will go that far in an old car. AND camping? My wife will only camp at a Holiday Inn!! It was also neat to see a pic of your vintage printing press.

Thanks for the pix.It sure looks like you had a good time.
Some of us western Massholes call Rt.209 the "Ho Chi Min Trail" . It's an awesome ride, that's for sure.
I drove that road every spring for 12 years going to the NATS East in York,Pa.

    I am so jealous!

  22. That 2nd pic . . . if a cutie like Becky likes you, you must be doing something right.

Cool pics, but what's all that green stuff?

    Couple weeks back.

Does that full-fendered A roadster belong to ChevyGirlRox?

Interesting that you're driving a blue 54 Ford coupe.
I was writing about mine a while back in the Route 66 Fun Run post.
Here's one you ought to like.

Curious too as to what kind of printing process you're using for the posters?

    Interesting post, great pics, thanks.

smokey- thanks SOOOO much for that clear tarp. it was a life saver. after all, it stopped the rain. not from falling on my art, but from falling altogether. but we predicted that.

it was great meeting you. and i will never do that again without an EZ up. dang, i guess it's time to go pro...

    jay,

i don't know if i am doing anything right, but i am blessed by that girl. she is pretty special. and puts up with all my procrastinating, art making, and wanderlust for travel in an old car...

that roadster is megan's, yes. i was going to go back and add some captions this morning.

as for printing, i am using traditional relief print making processes. i carve from linoleum blocks, and print on that press you can see at the beginning of the post. it is a letterpress proofing press from the 1880s. super simple, reliable, and HEAVY. hopefully i only have to move it one more time...

and the '54...it was my dad's. we lost him very unexpectedly last summer. and while pretty much everyone else in the family likes to stay away from his cars for now because it is too much to bear, i find it too much to bear to be away from them. so i drive the wheels off this thing. and it is super reliable, rides great, and sounds sooooooooooo nice. that red one is a great looking little buggy.

oh, and the green stuff is GRASS and LEAVES. you make up for the lack of that by being able to drive your roadster on christmas day.
