My new military french flathead will be converted to a Hot Rod engine

    I'm running FFH in my 51 pick-up and very happy with it. One suggestion is to remove the bosses on the back of the block. Should help with firewall clearance.

    all of the 3.9 litre French Flatheads pictured should have the alloy oil pans with rear sump
    but not all of them have the ugly bosses casted at the rear, the earlier ones came without

    I took some measurements of the critical aeras - and yes the French invented the metric system ;)

    Now, finally I,m ready to put up some photos and tech around the build.

    The extra material for the gov. boss, need to be machined, to get clearance on firewall

    There is no holes for the scatter bars

    Need to be drilled if you are going to use bars, I need it, as I will explain later

    The bottom rail, se marking, need to be grinded about 1/4" to get oil back in pan, as the 59AB oil pan breather need to be plugged

  13. what do you do to the holes in the area that you machined? tap them and plug them?

    The solution I went for was to use one belt from crank to generator, and then another one from generator to pumps. To get that working with only one adjustment (generator) I made a special pulley with outer groove seperated in two halfs, so that I could shims them to get belt tension. I will get some photo of it later.

    I painted the block in some early style ford green

    And did plug the two holes for water passage, so that I could use 59AB styled heads

    Nice to see those old MOPAR motor getting used. Seems Mopar built them longer than ford did..............

    Built by Simca under license when Simca was owned by Chrysler.

    Can you please explain in more detail?
    I might have that issue on my French Flatties as well. I'm running a French block with it's original alloy oilpan but an early 21-stud intake and the fuel pump stand breather.
    What exactly needs to be modified to get him breathing right?

    BTW: I'm running G29T style water pumps, allowing for a single fan belt together with the dual French pulley and an 8BA style PowerGen.

    I,m not familiar with the design of the alloy oilpan, but if it don,t have any breather, you will need a PCV valve from what I understand. I have mounted one in my intake (I will show some pictures later) and it seams to work for me.
    The reason for grinding in the block is that the french block have the oil return here (from valve area to oil pan) and with no grinding the oil return will be blocked by the pan.

    tack så mycket - so with my French alloy rear sump pan I should be fine and this modification is only req'd if using a steel pan.

    You need to check that the oil return hole has free conection to the oil pan, either thru oil pan or grinding in block

    If the aluminum pan came with the French engine it is shaped to return the oil correctly. Problem happens when you fit a 59A Ford pan.

    I also have a French block with G29T pumps, works very well. The pumps are nicely made and rebuildable I got parts from Flatordead in Germany.

    I am running early style manifold and rigged a PCV valve hidden in the valley.

    Old Ford in Campbell Ca has a French block in their showroom. One of the owners at SoCal Sacramento Ca has used many French blocks if you want to try and pick his brain.
