Thanks for the offer but at this time I am all fixed up as far as pictures goes . I was concerned about the trunk area mostly ( a few months ago ) but I have come to the conclusion that I will be using the Caprice trunk floor anyway . Andy...
That car looked solid Don . The guy is lucky . I hope he dosen,t have the work in front of him I have . These old cars look cool with all the old patina on them . Andy..
Well its been a while since the last update . There has been no progress up until the last few days . I am on holidays and I think I will be able to squeeze a couple days for the car . In june I took on a paint and body repair that took 10 days and then not two weeks later replacement of two quaterpanels on a 2001 Blazer . Have to make the coin when you can . The Buick is outside under a tarp . Hate to see that, but when jobs come in the shop the Buick has to go somewhere . Anyways I was able to sandblast the hood and disassemble the grille and blast it as well . The hood underside had some heavy surface rust and I am in the process of removing it with jellied rust remover and Rustmort . When this dries it will be ready for primer . This may be my last build so I am going to do it right . All of my previous cars were drivers that looked good topside but I never showed the engine compartment . They were never detailed much . Might be few more posts later this weekend we'll see , thats my intent anyways . Andy....
All in good time . Small projects and then back onto the large issue at hand . The mating of the Buick to the Caprice frame . Sometimes a break is what a guy needs to get back into the swing of things .
Never heard of Rustmort before. It's not something I have seen on the shelves down under, but it's something I think I need to have here and now. I've been squrting Killrust all over the place inside my car's cabin, but I think it's nothing more than just expensive spraypaint. Looks like Rustmort is a phosphoric acid/water based rust remover, and I have found something similar here called white knight. Anyway, if it doesn't work, I can always clean my teeth with it... Great (little) project you have there. She's a beauty
Hopin she'll be a beauty someday . Lots of work ahead though thats for sure . Good luck on yours as well . I am subscribed . C-ya Andy...
Good to see you are back on it, been waiting for an update. Keep after it, its getting better and better!
Good to see you back on it Andy, I was hoping to meet you at Moncton ,did you make it in to tha show?
As I was also Steve but I had a job in the shop that weekend that I had to get out so saturday was a bust for me and I didnt have the time to go to the show on Sunday either because I had to assemble the Blazer after paint then off to my other job for 3:00 PM Heres a few more of the hood and the grille all cleaned up and in primer now . Tomorrow I will be in the garage all day hoping to get more progress on the buick . Andy...
What I used on my Model A was white vinegar & water. It was mixed as 1 part Vinegar to 3 parts Water ratio. It cleaned the rumble pan nearly new. A few spots were still showing some light rust but it came off with some scrubbing.
As I stated I would have another day with the Buick . To hot here to do anything else (33 degrees ) 98 F I got the rear frame section cut to length and welded back on both sides. For some reason the frame on the drivers side is lower than the other but when I check level at the front of the car its fine but I have to put a bottle jack back by where the trailing arms attach to the frame for the rest of the car to be good . Anyway I'll deal with that later . 2,3,4,5 is the rear corner water channel that needs repaired . Dont pay Eastwood or any other company for a copper backup plate for welding pinholes . This is just a piece of 1/2 copper waterpipe cleaned and the crushed with a mall . It works great . I started to cut down the caprice trunk floor to install . Andy..
More pics of the trunk first mockup . Had to trim it to fit . But remarkably it is the correct width at the trunk drops . Funny how some of this stuff works so well with these old cars . I did a measure of the upper deck shelf that goes from wheelwell to wheelwell and it is exactly the right width . Go figure
I've been using the copper pipe too! It's a lot cheaper than buying the copper backing plates from Eastwood, as you've mentioned. While filling the holes on my buddies '50 F1 firewall, he'd hold the flattened copper pipe over the holes from the inside while I welded them up from the outside. Worked great! It's good to see you making some more progress on your Buick. I'm still amazed at how you are transforming the rusted mess into a really cool custom. Keep up the great work!
Thanks boys. They say patience is a virtue. Patience my ass . I am just stubborn and this car will submit. Andy...
On another note what do you guys think if I were to radius the rear quaterpanels . I would like someone to photoshop a side profile of a 51 Buick with the radius . And if they are up to it chop it with a nice midnight teal green for a color . Would surely appreciate it . I am sure there are guys that are into the photoshop thing deep and would like a chance to bring my vision a little closer to reality . Thanks to all . Andy..
Thanks Nali . Rust is still the major issue here but I like the way you think . One hour at a time . Thats the way to do it . Hows your Buick coming along ?
Too bad ..... Or too good ... I didn t know anything about car engine nor bodywork 5 years ago , so I m still learning . Now I can almost weld and build a patch with a metal finish . Not perfect yet . I learn a lot with Flop topic . I have a decent engine , a 263 made in Canada made in 1951 , my 248 is dead . For now I m still slowly working on my OT project , a AMC Ambassador 1966 mild custom , but with a supercharger Eaton and I suppose Megasquirt and TBI in Rochester B carbs . But since my girl is gone 1 year ago , I have pb to have faith in whatever I do . And quite in burn out in fact . I may start the 38 next year, when the 66 is done . But be sure it will be perfect I didn t want to touch it before I learn how to do . Phil . Edit : I also have a Delta 88 1979 with a 350 Olds ( works really nice ) , bought to swap , but I prefer to keep a 8 in line than a V8 The first idea was to put a V8 in the 38 . Bad idea , too many V8 ...
Aaah ,thanks, I guess LOL Thats not the first time over the years that I have heard that . But what the hell anyone can take rust free car and have a nice outcome but me I have always been a sucker for punishment . I got married didn't I ? Oops did I say that outloud ? I hope the wife dont read this thread . Andy...
Lol Andy ! Great to see you getting some time back on the Buick ,hopefully I can get back to the 47 soon
