Hey Andy, been following this build for a wile. Love the Buick! I got a 35 myself. Keep chipping your way thru that rust, I got a 60 Pontiac that turned out to be a rust bucket. So I know where your coming from. It can be very frustrating, but the work your doing looks great! Keep it up, can't wait to see it done. Ryan
Thanks for the words ryguy442 . I must check out your projects if you have any threads ?? This stuff is a curse sometimes but for the most part it is theraputic for me as I have a stressful job and the garage is a place to come to unwind and melt some wire in . And Lots Of It
Yeah I have a build page on here for my 60 Pontiac, hasn't been updated in a wile iv been really busy doing side jobs just to afford parts so I can work on it. I agree with you 100% my life has become very stressful the past couple months and metal work has turned into my therapy. Tho metal work can cause stress too! But yeah check out my page, let me know what ya think Ryan
Hey Andy, Keep up the great work. The foundation you're building today will definitely pay off with dividends later. The work that no one will see will make the outside panels look like new...keep it up. You will be thankful when you get to the exterior panels. My last build (39 Chev 4dr) had the lower 3"-4" rusted away all the way around the car, including floor boards and supports. I learned how to weld sheet metal on that project. I'm going to start my own build thread of my Buick. Is there any trick to setting up a build thread in the Hamb (I'm not much of a computer guy)? Thanks, Dale
Hey ryguy I checked out your Pontiac and man that car has some pretty cool lines . You need to get on it . That would be a very nice car when you are done with it . As others have said do your dad proud .
I'm going to start my own build thread of my Buick. Is there any trick to setting up a build thread in the Hamb (I'm not much of a computer guy)? Thanks, Dale[/QUOTE] No Dale no tricks . Seeing that you are posting on here you must have done your introduction to the site . Then you just title a new thread . Load some pics from your current project onto your computer on the thread tab hit go advanced . Hit the paperclip icon on the advanced page and it will bring a browse window . Hit brouse and it will go to your picture files select what pictures you want on your thread after you load up the thread hit upload and it will save them to the page add some text . hit preview and it will show you how it will look then hit submit reply and it then appears on your own page . Simple , Right ??? , Andy..
Just a small update for those of you following along . 2 Hours spent just replacing this rusted piece of crap . It is 7" x 9" , so not big at all but 1 1/2 hours cutting and hammering into shape and 1/2 hour welding into place . The car gets stronger with each panel that gets repaired . Working away one hour at a time . Again no need to be to fussy in here but yes I agree with 48superconvert that it will make outer skin easier to keep straight when it comes to doing so . Andy..
goddamn man!!! that car is a lotta work !!!! but your thorough even on the parts no one will ever see again... i envy your patience, and your skill!!! its gonna be a rock solid, straight, rattle free sled when your done.. i tip my hat to you sir!! now im done being nice , is it chopped yet?? lol keep on it pal, i love this build! like i said your a madman..
Hows it goin Glassguy . You got that right in regaurds to being rocksolid and RATTLE FREE . See how I emphasized RATTLE FREE !!! Anything that rattles drives me insane when I am driving and I will go to great lenghts to find the source and fix it . Nows the time . Chop will be after Christmas I am thinking with the rate that I am going . Gotta do this quaterpanel 1st and then get inside and tie the floor all together from trunk to B pillar at least before the chop begins . Later , Andy
Thanks for the comment . you have a prettly cool looking Buick as well . When you get it done it will be a very nice Kustom . Andy..
Thanks Rob I see you are still poking away at it as well . Its all relative . I do kick myself in the ass if I think for one minute that I am going to stay in the house and do nothing . That would be a shock to my system .Like I said before I thinK I have a touch of OCD or at least it seems that way
Well its been a few days and I got a little done on the Buick . The last picture post showed the B pillar inner structure in place and welded up . I made up a panel that will cover from the door opening to about where the wheel opening will begin . I think I am going to make the opening like a Chevy quarter of the same era. Its flat and easy to work with . Can bend one up in no time , we'll see ? Anyways The panel was stretched over the beaterbag to give the rolled bottom edge that is on the Buicks .
Next is more of the same in regaurds to the rust issues at the wheelwell and rear quaterpanel . At the rear of the panel is where I get a little creative . I am using the top section of the 52 chev donor quaterpanel to give me my needed lower return for the buick . I know it looks a little funky right now but I have to put the rest of the panels in place first before I say one way or the other . I think it will be fine though . I am going to use the early 50s chevy wheel opening on this side as they are very basic and easier to cover over if I decide to run cruiser skirts at a later date . What do you guys think should I continue stitching her up ?
I am on 2 weeks of holidays so i am able to squeeze more time for the Buick . I still have until Nov 5th . I am in the process of making up a new quaterpanel for the passenger side . Like I said before I will use the simpler 50s style chev wheel arch design . I think it looks good . I still have to fold the quarterpanel at the wheel opening that will come after i get it all welded in . The welding of the two panels took some time as you have to go slow as to not let the panel get all warped out of shape . If you have been following along , all the work I did on the driver side will get cut off and I am going back to the drawing board and use the templates I have from this side . I hate to do that but thats what happens sometimes . Youspend hours on something and in the end cut it all out . I dont mind though it will be for the better . Later , Andy..
Andy, you never cease to amaze me. Your drive just to make it happen, make all your patch panels you need and continue to cut out rust and replace is inspiring. Keep up the good work!
Doug thanks for the kind words . A fellas gotta do what a fellas gotta do . There is no after market stuff for these cars sooo, Lots of panel shaping . But I enjoy this part of building the car even more so than actually driving it . I hope this ones a keeper. All of my other cars were built , driven a couple years then sold .
Andy, I know what you mean about enjoying the building more than the driving. The challenge is in the build and once the build is done we need another challenge. It can be frustrating not being able to be "normal" and just keep em and drive around but we are who we are and we do what we do for our satisfaction.
Got some more done today . This holiday thing is great . I get some work done for the wife and then its garage time . I still have another week so it will be busy for the next week with the posts. I worked on the quarterpanel tonight and got it all in place and tacked in . It looks pretty good . I wish I had a english wheel though as there is a compound curve in these cars thats hard to achieve without one . All I can do is all I can do . I can put some pressure to create the correct bow in the quarterpanel when I get the car on the rotisserie . I have the plans and some material to build one in the near future . This is the only way that I am going to get the underside all tied in as well . I will use it for this project and then sell it to finance the car some more . I still have to fold the lip on the quaterpanel . I will have to remove the wheel to get this done . That ought to be fun as I know that there is clearance issues still with the tire , brakedrum , wheelwell . Andy... PS the third picture is of a panel puller that I am using to align the panels when tacking in place . Might as well use the cleco holes for something .
Wow Andy thats side looks like it's coming together pretty quick ! Once you did one side the other seems to go a little quicker.I got one of the Princess auto E wheels in the spring but havent managed to put it together yet lol! Its first use will be for the skirts for the 47.
