No special shape Nali . I say custom glass because of the fact that it will have to be cut to fit the new opening. It is just a stock 51 Buick windshield . Since you are asking , if you get some time please call them and see what the price is on a 1951 Buick . Model 48 D , Style Code 4311- D. This is a Buick Super Eight 2 door Sedan . The official name is a Tourback 2 Door Sedan . Thanks , Andy
hay this is moving along nicely.. keep it going.. any chance of getting a side shot of the back window with the door? That is a different way of doing it! How much you move it forward??
Dude I want to rent you for a week. My car would be done! Great work! Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk
Ok, so just cutted . I hope you made the top shop considering this . I also hope you made the top fitting a cutted glass. In case of not, it s easier to change metal shape than glass I ll call them Monday and tell you. You have a PM ...
Justifiably biased I say!! Looks great Andy ! Its fun eh all the detail welding and cutting involved in a chop ! Dont worry too much about cutting the parts up or using some steel rod on the edges of the doors etc to get your gaps etc. They werent great when built..but you will have them better than the car was when new ! I got 2 coats of epoxy on the 47 today...forgot to buy another bottle of activator though, and it still needs another coat, iwanted to get the skirts on and get it outside for a pic if its not shitty out I might get it out tomorrow. Its my birthday though so I dont know what the wife has planned .If its nice out I might throw the battery in the 64 and go for a cruise ...by myself
You have that right Steve . All the welding and grinding makes a guy realize how much work is involved and why guys who chop cars charge so much for the job . Hours and hours to say the least . I will have a look at HAMB tonight at work to see if there are any pics of the coupe on your thread . Seeing thats its your birthday I figure you should be able to do whatever you want . Carte Blanche . We guys think alot of things like this all the time but the wives ? Well lets just say they always seem to have other plans . Needless to say I will have a look just in case . And yes take some time for yourself and drive man drive !!!
Nali , what is prout ? PM received I will call at some point if I dont find a windshield in the Buicks at the old junkyard I mentioned a few posts ago . Andy..
Some done today before work . I had to cut out the beltline trim to sink the chevy rear window . I think the flow is dead on . If you can make out in the 6th picture I need to trim more on the window frame so the beltline will flow into the Buicks original line . Lots of finessing to say the least.
Fitzee I will keep plugging away thats for sure . I will be taking more pics and that 3/4 view will be coming shortly . the roof actually moved forward 5.25 inches . I am assuming that there will be a lot of pics coming from your thread next weekend ??? Andy...
Sorry .... Literally, it s the sound we make when we fart. It doesn t mean anything out of context. In this particular case, it s what happen after 2 beer when I have too many Firefox windows and don t write in the good one. I should have edited, but errors are parts of the life, so I found this quite funny.
Some pics for you ! i am in deep now .I removed the catwalk from the 51 chev and am going to incorperate it into the chop . I filled in the void left behind when the C pillars slid forward . this strengthened up the pillar considerably . I had to cut out the original beltline of the buick . I will reuse it as progress moves ahead . Andy...
Just tryin to keep you motivated once its all tacked in place it will finish up pretty quick, its just lotsa welding and grinding!
I hear ya Steve . Welding and grinding I will have my share for sure . I have some pics from over this week I will post tomorrow as I am at work right now . I am starting on the catwalk and fitting as I go . Lots of time sucking details . Andy...
Heres what I am thinking on the rear catwalk area. I know its hard to see but the catwalk now flows on the same plane as the window itself . The stock buick catwalk area was flat before . I think it looks better running this way. I tried to show it in the last picture Andy .
I dont know Andy, it just doesnt look quite right to me. The way it angles right into the gap between the catwalk and deck lid just doesnt flow. Also have you checked to make sure the deck lid doesnt hit it when opened fully?
Well now, thats a good question Doug . I will have to check that out and get back to ya. That may be an issue . Thanks for the critque ! Andy...
You are doing great work man, my 2 cents on the catwalk though, take a closer look at it before decide on your final look. I went through the exact same thing (my 53 old has the same body style as the buick), in my case though, to get the proportions right I had to make the catwalk wider because I also moved the roof forward, the difference though is I made mine into a hardtop. I had to make it a hardtop because the 4 door conversion forced me into it to make it look right. My window is out of a 40 Merc. I spent alot of time just looking at a the car from a distance and drawing it on paper until I got it right. Great updates by the way.
Although you guys are giving me some different options its also worring me a little as well . I thought I had it right . Now tomorrow I will have to have another look . Damn !!! 53 , your olds looks great . A job well done . The train of thought on my chop is that the rear window plane should run right into the catwalk and then flow onto the trunklid on a different plane . This is somewhat how it was stock . If I move the window forward more, my trim will be out of alignment and I am also afraid of getting that dreaded hump on the roof that you see so many chops having !!! Andy...
I notice that with back windows like this when you lay them down the middle on the bottom tend to rase up.. Im also concered with how the corner of the glass will flow around the corner. Not having anything between the window and the truck might be trouble.. Back windows can be a pain..Personally Ill build the rear piller first so that flows to the car and then figure out the back glass. your will figure it out.. we have faith in you..
