I was going through some old pictures last night and I ran across these! They are of my old 56 Ford gasser with a altered wheelbase, enjoy! Johnny!
It was a six banger with 3 on the column, my dad, brother and myself then removed the whole front steering, a-arms, etc. I bought a 66 Ford Econoline front axle and steering column that we placed under the front of the car! I had a friend that rolled his 69 Boss and the insurance company wrote it off so he bought it back for a couple of hundred bucks! He gave me the nine inch, 390, and 4 speed for $100! We found a front wrecked 55 in a junk yard and got the rear fender wells off it! Then the fun began, we moved the rear forward two feet and lost the rear seat! The we cut out the fender wells and added the pieces off the 55 to move them forward! While that was happing the motor went to Groff Brothers speed shop to be refitted and a cast iron duel quad setup added! Headers were home made fender exit type with cutouts, we rased the floorboard 2" and added a home made rollbar, Hurst floor 4, and mustang seats! I was running it at the Double Eagle till it closed and then out at San Antonio Dragway on Rittman Road! Here in San Antonio with a little street racing on the side! I ran Avation fuel ethel mix and was classed as A/Gas! A front tire blew and I rolled the car in 1978 at 128 mph broke both legs, left arm,and cracked 2 ribs! The the sad end is the 56 took it last ride to the salvage yard! It was a great car and it held about 2 or 3 local records up till the wreck! I thought you guys would enjoy looking at something from the good ole' days and many nights at the Flame drive-in and the Spotted horse here in San Antonio! Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New one! Johnny (TxGasser)
Its all fun and games until someone " Breaks both legs, one arm, and cracks 2 ribs ", THAT HAD TO HURT ! ! !
I love the chain sticking out of the hood, it's been years since I've seen anyone do that. I remember when it was pretty common place to have some sort of cable lock or chain with a padlock to keep people from stealing parts off of their engine. I used had a cable with a lock that I'd have to undo after I popped the hood on my Pontiac.
Neat looking car, but I kinda have trouble with: Altered wheelbase gassers. Boss 390's. (390 GT??) And maybe, A/Gas @ 400 Cubic inches= 2000/2600 lb. full bodied cars. Larry T
I thought chains were standard equipment on all cars 77 and back. They were usually laying in the trunk as an option for the new owner to install at a later date. They served the purpose of a safety latch, and to keep people from stealing yo*****.
Hey Johnny are you back racing now? Glad you made it out OK, that car looks like it was a lot of fun.
Sweet looking old AWB. I third the notion to build a clone, especially because it's a subject you don't see too much of at the strip anymore. Everyone rocks Bel Airs and Willys' (not that there's anything wrong with that).
heres my gasser project 36 dodge coupe 429 bbf,c6, 9 in rear fentons on front u.s. indys on the rear with some 10.5s I cant wait to take a ride
Real nice Mopor! I had thought about building a clone of my Ford gasser but your looking at $$$$$$$$ to find a clean 55-56 Ford! Which I don't have, LOL! (Belive me I have looked!) I ran across this on Bidbay not what I would like but maybe someone mite be interested in it? I will keep an eye out for more pics, my ex made off with alot of them years ago! http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1956...oryZ6230QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Have a rocking New Year! Johnny!
