Guess you could say I got the sickness too. The Orange Krate and the 5 speed orange fastback I just picked-up and both are in excellent original condition. Gary

I have some old schwinns and old schwinn type bikes. I was just at wal mart and theyre selling sting-ray repops, the old style ones for $88. They look cheap compared to the vintage stuff, but for a kid they sure are cooler than most new bikes.

Alot of people dont know that the 20" Sting-Ray Frames were made in three different sizes. Im a lil upset to see that you can get them @ Wal-mart though...

  15. My first bike was a Schwinn Super-Delux Stingray. Metalic blue. It was like the Crates but with a full sized front wheel, and white walls. I completely restored it when I was about 17,but my mom put it out on the porch and someone stole it! I still have my brothers Wasp, and my dads Phantom. Might restore them someday...

The best part of my average day in the shop is when a guy my age comes in and goes totally nuts over the row of Stingrays tucked in the back of the shop.
The best one by far thought is when my uncle (who I sadly don't share the closest relationship with) showed up unexpectedly to my store's Grand Opening and saw the bikes. He latched on to one of the bikes I bought recently and went completely bananas! He gushed how he had added the very unique stickers to the frame, the tall sissy bar and the unusual grips. He lit up like I had never seen. He had a rough childhood and this seemed to be the only good thing that had ever been a part of it. He talked about it all night and showed it to his brothers (one my dad) and went over every part in great detail with them.
He has now called me a couple times every week (never mentioning the bike) and has involved me with an incredible new business he's launching in the next 60 days- WEIRD how some simple things can mean so much.
The home run on the bike my uncle says was his is that the people I got it from had owned it for the last 40 years- 2 blocks from where my uncle lived! No way could he have controlled that- or that they got it "second hand" approximately at the EXACT same time it was stolen from him.

Those were the days (early '70s), any mx-bike had to built at home and we preferred the heavy Schwinn frames because they could take a real beating. The neighborhood kids would bug one of the guys that had a welder (usually oxy-acetylene) to weld a crossbar onto their handlebars, usually fashioned from a length of old sissy bar. The crossbar welding 'ritual' was a major event for sure, now your bike not only looked cool it wouldn't bend the bars when you jumped it.[IMG]

When I was about 13 I built up a little sidehack out of 2 Schwinn girl's Sting Ray frames and numerous other old big Schwinn frames for the curved tubing. I would fit a few tubes (dull hacksaw and a round file) and beg for some welding in several stages until it was finished. My younger brother and I would proceed to break a few small bones jumping it on a huge 'ski-jump' at a local park in the hills of Chatsworth, one of those traumatic little events in life that helps to bond you.[IMG]

The 'hack frame, bondo smoothing out the major joints still intact 35 years later. Some people never throw anything away. [IMG]

I've got several Schwinn Stingrays and Murray banana seat bikes, including my first bike...a Coppertone Stingray Jr. But I really don't know what to do with them to enjoy them. They take up a lot of my garage and make it hard to get to my cars to work on them. It's to the point that I was thinking of selling most of them. If I did, I'd keep my original bike, and a Pepto pink Lil Chic for my daughter. But, I'd rather keep them and find some way to enjoy them. I'm not a large guy, but they seem so small when I'm on them. Suggestions? Do you guys actually ride 'em?

schwinn.jpg I just got this Schwinn and it will need lots of work. I have a correct back fender but not the huge basket that goes on the brackets up front. This style was first made in 1939 and was used for paper boys, grocery delivery boys and home delivered alcohol.
It should have the sign board which often had the name of the grocery store. Heres what a Scwhinn Cycle Truck looked like new otherschwinn.jpg
