My roadster was supposedly a lakes racer. Anyone have any history on it?

I like that car and to change the old yellow to primer was a big mistake. $.02

I get it. That is exactly why I didn't pursue trying to buy it nor would I recommend buying that car or a car like it especially one that had a bit of Hamb history. There will always be someone who pisses and moans because you changed it even if you change the tires after they wear through to the cords.
I don't like the ******** primer over no body work with the silly ***ed numbers slopped on it either. That makes it look just like a hundred wannabees that show up at Bonneville every year lately with numbers slopped on them with a cl*** designation that the car never would have fit in in the 50's if it had been built in the 50's.

Hell, I had the 51 Merc that I bought in high school for 32 years and some guys that I knew in high school still called it Darlington's old Merc at our 40th cl*** reunion when they asked what I had done with it. To them it never was my car but always his old car. I know what it is like to buy someone else's car and always have it viewed that way no matter how long a guy has it.

The car primed for a show and not ment to be perminate. The primer is rattle canned. Comes right off with a rag. The 50+ year old paint is still alive and well so everybody relax. Before the car was temporarily primered, there was black primer in the wheel wells and the base of the body that (gasp!) was shot over the yeller paint and looked free hand. That was not only not original but very poorly done. No one complained about that either. At least we bothered to use masking tape.
The lettering is a water-base and that comes off even easier. Course, the lame-*** Japanese writing done with electrical tape? Well, thats history. Sorry. Ironically, that electrical tape did more damage to the "50+ year old paint" than the primer did (and im sure that wasnt original either but no one whined about that).
The car was temporarily done for a show. We were going to wipe it off and start a serious restoration and then decided to sell the car to our friend. Its now in the best of hands and he'll give it the TLC it really needs. Big group hug guys. No need to commit seppuku.....The car is in the best of care- than it ever has been. Mr Knucklehead will really make this car what it needs to be. Im sure he'll take the evil prime off and it will be yellow once again.
Why some in here blew a gasket over this is beyond me. The car was for sale before we bought it. If those out there really want to preserve history (Ninja-like electrical tape and all cause they called roadsters "w***abe" back then.....im sure of it) then simply buy the car.
Once again, the paint is just fine. It was cleaned and shot over with really cheap primer that comes right off. If fact, it would take less time to do that then it took some in here to complain about it.
The paint is fine guys. Relax.

Why does Hawkerdriver need to justify what he chose to do to your old ride?? If it was so important that this piece of "history" remain in it's "original" state, then maybe it should of stayed in your garage. Well said Hawkerdriver and X2.

Did I ask for justification? Nope. I simply stated I didn't like what he did with it. Then he got offended and made fun of some tape and the name I gave it and that was that. I mean, he really focused on that tape didn't he?;)

i agree. the PO acts like he built the thing or that it had some kind of significant history. i don't think he even owned it for a year. bought it basically as it looks now, put electrical tape on the side of it, called it w***abe and then sold it. now he has the nerve to call it "cookie cutter". pfffft please.

i hope it's in better hands now and gets the full attention it deserves. that yellow mess was uglier than ugly.

does every hacked up roadster have dry lakes racing history now?

Wow. I guess all of you know me and how much work I did to that car and the reasons I had for selling it all too well. So I guess there's nothing else to say.
Sorry to Knuckle if you're offended. You seemed really cool when I met you and I'm sure it will be cool again someday.

Yeah, he really didn't do too much to it. This is what it looked like when he got it, except it was ALL flat black. He cleaned up the body best he could, raised the back a couple inches, built the hood, headlight bar and deck lid, re did the headlights and tailights, went through the engine, changed grills, built a set of headers, changed the steering wheel to a 40 Standard, took the electric fan off...You get the idea

So basically you threw some electrical tape on the doors and called it good?

According to these know-it-alls I've never met, yes. Funny thing is, I'm
Not even the one that did the electrical tape.

Gloss black would be fine and all. Thats up to the new owner to decide that. His car. His deal. Hes one of the best out there- both as a friend and a car guy, so the roadster is in excellent care.
So hopefully, he can find out the history of the car and enjoy the hell out if it- whatever he decides to do with it.
That all being said- there's no such thing as an original hot rod. The only "original" cars are those that are stock. These cars were modified back in the day. The re done when the styles changed. The re done again. Now, the cars are going back to a more traditional style and that's whats hot right now. What I find laughable are these so called "purists" who once hammered away on VW's are now instant historical experts because rockabilly is now cool. What they dont get is these cars have evolved back and forth for 60 years. They will change again- bet on that. And im sure there will be those ******* their pants when it happens.

    So here's how it works:

If you like a car (electrical tape and all cause that looks swell.....) and you want to "save" it- then buy the ****in thing.

If you own a car and want to keep it the way it is (electrical tape and all cause that looks swell) then DONT sell the ****in thing.

    Pretty simple stuff.

...and we're back to the tape. Haha, this is getting repe***ively stupid. G'night fellas. And the only person talking about original or purist is you. I didn't come from VWs but you sure seem to be the king of hot rods even though you admittedly told me that you just got into them and were a muscle car guy just a mere few years ago. Just sayin. I'm out, peace.

Wow, that got outa hand. For the record im gonna make it an 80's street rod with bright pink paint, with lots of billet and IFS.

Ok T money i love the roadster and im glad you rubbed off the black. Seeing the old pictures is an inspiration and i might just find myself in the garage with a gallon or thinner and a 12 pack. My whole reason for starting this thread was to find out if anyone had any real original pictures of it in its racing days and or at least early years. I love the hood, deck lid headlight bar and im glad you raised the rear end. Not trying to cause a fuss here, just lookin for some history.

It's yours now, just drive the wheels off of it and enjoy your time with it., If it has a history, you may need to find out where Rudy got it from and trace it back from there.

I have a dis***embled 29 A Roadster that I was lucky enough to get info on due to the mods made to the windshield mounting area,a 4 & 1/2" section in the cowl area and the hammerwelded filled rear wheel wells.

It also has a hammerwelded in 40 dash that had some engine turned inserts where the stock gauges were and speaker grille area. A former fellow PRC member happened upon a stack of MAY 25th,1947 dry lakes pics and low and behold, I.D.'d it was behind the timing stand. It's in the SCTA program and has what it ran and had for owner speed equip.

Don Montgomery's,Tex Smith's, Al Drakes,Dean Batchelor's and others Hot Rod book's could help here. Good luck in the search.

Im glad when im riding around in it that it looks like a 40s dry lakes racer.

Oh wait, maybe to make it super cool like it was before the primer, he could paint it pink and put some Helo Kitty figures on the door.
