i've always believed it to be an A spring(modified eye). this is a cleaned up version of the original early 60's build. the original builder gas cut through the axle with no sleeve at all, adding random welds here and there. sketch city.

 

the cross member is in the stock A location, the axle still sits under the cross member. the back edges line up. makes it look stout.
