Well we took out the SDRA car yesterday to Thunder Valley in Nobel Oklahoma. I had the two crew guy on my Pro Mod with me to drive it Robert 48 and Tyler 18. Both did a great job. We mad 6 p***es no problems the guys were pushing each other to see who was going to be the fastest. Well Tyler Ran a good p*** 11.22 @115.32. Robert was going to beat the youngen. Robert did a good burn out. (yes it spins the 10" hurst Slicks) He left good. It went out 150 or so and sheared all off the 1/2 -13 studs off the new Stange 31 splin axels we bought for the slicks. Well he was in the right lane and it was the right rear so he made a hard right into the wall did a 360. The most important thing he is OK. I will start taking it apart in a few days. I have to get my Pro Mod Read to test this weekend. I will Post a few pics later. Who ever said these cars are not hard leavers were wrong. P.S. It weighed 1550 pounds Race Ready.
You gota get the car together for the May meet at Tulsa. I would love to run a set of slicks to see how mine would do but I know that with the stock rearend it would let go a lot faster than yours. That is one of the reasons we want to keep the treaded tires on these cars because if we start running other than those we start breaking parts. Breaking parts makes it very exspensive to run and the fun starts going away fast. Some have money and some don't so we want the ones without the money[me] to be able to run the full schedule and have fun all year. It sounds like you have the car running very good and tell those guys that it is a little different when you are running the 6 inch treaded tires because you have to finesse it off the line and that is when the flatheads blow you away, they just rev it up and go while you're back there getting on and off the throttle. Roy
Glad nobody got hurt. Please give us all the details you can. Were you using a "pie crust" type slick? Did you have any tire shake or wheel hop? The pie crusts look cool. I'd like to go to them, but the sidewalls don't flex, and absorb shock like a modern slick.
Yes we were running the HURST PIE Crust old cheater slicks. They really worked well. Rand Man you are right they do not wrinkel up at all. The sidewalls are as hard as a brick. I had no idea on what air to runn in them so i treated just like the slicks on my Pro Mod. We made seval p***es and kept going up on the PSI untill we were using al of the tire. These tires are made on goodyear radial's with the recap on top of them. Started at 20psi and we were at 28psi. The car did hop on the 2nd p*** but the tires were still a tad wet when he staged. When it broke the studs it did not hop at all and was out 150 foot or so. Most of the load would of been over by then. MudFlap as for May we should make it. I am trying to find a new front axel. I ordered new front Wheels today. We took the trans and motor out tonight and will cut the front end off Thursday night. I need to get a hold of Bob H and find out were he found that front axel so I can try and get another one. As for the 6" tires I know this is the equilizer. But I am a drag racer and I do ont feel I am doing anything if I am not trying to make it go faster one way or the other. I also know that the HAMB guys will not let us run with them at the Nationals so I was looking at what to do in the Dragster cl***.
alright,.....call me a newbie or a dip**** or whatever but whats SDRA? Senior Drag Racing? Sled Dog racing? Scale dragster? south dakota? south drag? sorry to hear about your car. at least it was something mechanical and not driver error. would be worse i think to let some guy go racing down the track in your car and watch him smash it coz he couldnt drive. good luck getting it back on the track.
senior dragster racing ***ociation. Basically a hamb car but we allow autos and 4 barrels.we are based in tulsa and will have 9 events this year and we welcome all hamb cars to run with us
Hemi, What engine/****** combination are you running? I see you ran 11.22 @ 115 mph. That makes me wonder what I can expect from our car since we're running 12.10 @ 120.5 mph on 5.5" tires that are 30 years old (hard as a *****s heart) and granny shifting the ****** to keep from breaking it. Have you dyno'ed your engine? Just curious, Ron
Ron, I first of know you by you extstive knowledge of these cars and motor building skills. This car is 1550 LBS with a 4:11 for 9", 1957 GMC 302. It is not a true HAMB that is Why I called a SDRA car. Some on this board get all pissy if you call it HAMB because I use a 1955 Holley 650cfm carb and a 1962 Alum Powerglide, everything else meets their club rules. Yes I did a little work on the power plant. It made 394 hp at 5100rpm and 364lbs at 4400rpm 30deg. My back ground is Outlaw Pro Mod Racing. I used a few ideas from my blower car to pick up several HP. What numbers have you gotten out of yours? The car has ran 11:33 at 117 in 3400 foot air on the 6" wide bais ply tires. The larger wheels and tires add so much more weight. 144 pound over the 6". So I do not know if it was worth it. I would enjoy bench racing with you on the phone if you ever wanted too.
I dynoed our 321" Jimmy on our DTS dyno: 347 HP @ 5400 & 347lb/ft TQ @ 4600. I feel I'm giving up some power with the short zoomies and the Rochester carbs. I'm just waiting for the ****** to break so I have an excuse to change to a Glide and maybe a mechanical injection on alcohol. I don't like having to baby the damn ******, I'd just as soom have it break and be done with it. I'd like to talk to you whenever you have the time. You can get me any evening at home. 816-436-6108 Ron
11.33 on these 6 inch bias ply tires wow! I don't know how you can make it hook that good. Well when the Tulsa races begin it looks like nthere will be a lot of porch dogs. The big race will be for second.Roy
Ron, Sorry, I have been in FL with my Family for Spring Break all last week, just got home. I will call you this week and we can share info you want.
glad to hear the driver was safe and progress is happening....those times and numbers you guys are getting are awesome...must be a handful, although fun I'm sure. Get it fixed, and get it going again, look forward to seeing more. Cheers, Andrew
Thanks Drefus, we are trying to find a front axel. We cut the front end off and have repalced it. Starting to build new side pannels and Jimmy mounts. Will update you as we progress. Thanks.
Well it is almost resurected, have the GMC 302 back in it all wired and going to start on the trans and the new floor. It is not as pretty as it was but is not bad and we can clean it up this winter after we race for a while. Ron we should be thier in KC.. Going to try and make make Ardmore on May 30th for the Whitewall Drags.
Todd, It looks like you and our crew will be the only ones here for the June 7th event. Looking forward to seeing you. Are you bringing your Pro Mod car? Ron
Well I am HAPPPY to say the car is back on the ground ready to race this saturday at Ardmore Raceway in the Whitewall Drags. I took it for a quick lap down the street and all is well. Like I said before she is not a pretty as she once was but this winter after a good race season, I will doll her back up. See you guys at the races soon.
