yeah they do, that's why i'm sending them back. i decided i'm gonna grab a set of 64 impala hubs & switch over to the wayyy cheaper tapered roller bearings. that's the plan anyways. gotta round those parts up, install my ball joint & spring spacers, swap out my transmission, & maybeeee pick up a new radiator, all before august 5th so i'm ready for the 4th annual return to milltown!
got these: and this is goin in tomorrow night. swap meet saginaw, that looks like it should work, and a nicely rebuilt hurst shifter that's good as new!
new 4-speed is in & works mint! very excited about this new development. mainly because i wire wheeled some rust crusties off a few gear teeth, but hell what do you want for $75? just took it for a quick rip around the block cuz it was pouring & the no wipers/inner fenders/big hole in the hood make for less than fun wet weather driving. it feels like a new car! well not new, but a much better shifting 1 anyways. so long crappy, noisey, sloppy shifter having overdrive truck tranny! you will not be missed. but i am keeping it safe under my bench for when i blow this one up...
i like this pic because when i pulled in the show these other tri 5s weren't parked there. they came & parked next to mine in an obvious attempt to make their's look better
ive said it before and ill say it again, i love your car. i can really appreciate someone who just gets a project going without being 100% finished. its all about enjoying it and upgrading along the way. ive wanted a '55 for years and for nothing more then to make a gasser!
to do list before the return to milltown: 1. new rear motor mounts/ fix tranny crossmember mounts 2. impala front hub swap 3. new front shoes 4. ball joint & spring spacers 5. new radiator just waiting on the hubs & motor mounts, both should be in by saturday which is when i plan on bangin' this stuff out. that way all i have to do next week to prep for the show is to wash the car (for the first time since i've owned it).
Looking good man! My '57 hardtop got a Saginaw when I was a teenager (it was what I could find/afford), and it did ok...1st gear was a little low, and I wailed on it a little harder than I should have (broke it). It got replaced by a Super T-10 out of a wrecked "late model (81)" Vette. My dad has a '55 Belair 2 dr sedan, that I would love to see as a gasser style build, but he'll have no part of it. We do, however, have a very rusty '57 210 post that would be perfect...and the 327/4 speed that is coming out of my '57 hardtop. Its in such bad shape I wouldn't feel bad about "cutting it up" . Hmmm....
8FLEET9, what type of balljoint spacer is that your getting? C style that goes between balljoint and spindle or the one that fits between A-frame and balljoint.
^^^^^ I dont know if you ever used them. Look for interfearance at the upper control arm snubber bracket. The higher you go the closer that space gets to touching.
my car already has a higher than stock front spring, 409 impala, or some other aftermarket spring, so that gap is already pretty tight (almost topped out) so the spacers will give that spring a little more room to work along with letting me run a coil spacer for a little more height.
Should have explained better. Im refering to side to side space, not the space between the snubber and the a-frame. The spacer gets close to the bracket that holds the snubber.
i used them e bay spacers my self and i took them out ..they made my tire rub the top of the a arm you may need a spacer for the wheel...just so you know ...good luck and the rear wheels look fuckin sick i just got chrome reverse ones im thinking of running love the cap too...
nah dude, i'm running 4" wide fronts & 165 80 tire. it's a mile away. thanks the wheels did come out pretty sweet.
today was "one of those days". work sucked. bogus customer cars for a saturday, no parts, everything i touched turned to poo-poo. had to drill out the hubs to accept the larger front wheel studs, no big deal. no drill bit to do it, big deal. spent an hour & a half searching out a drill it & getting lunch. hub swap went fine, did the brakes. brakes still suck. bleed the brakes. get a lil air out the front, adjust the fronts up a lil tighter. still suck. bleed the rear. nothing. just a lil dribble. no pressure. gonna try & replace the rear brake hose tomorrow & possibly throw a new master at it if the hose don't fix it. also prolly gonna wait til after milltown to do the balljoint/spring spacers. there's some other front end stuff i wanna do & time/$ aren't gonna let that happen this week. oh well, all this thrashing will be worth it friday afternoon around 3 o'clock...
me & my buddies have been spending alot of time in here these past few days. anybody who cares to talk shit about cut & buffed white walls obviously never got a set done by someone who knows what they are doing. my buddy matty knows what he's doing... he also whipped up this air cleaner. it was for his t-bucket, but that just sits under a tarp, so i'll be rockin it for a while. it's made out of 4 velocity stacks & the cans have been on them since those beers got drunk. swapped out the master for a 70 chevelle manual drum unit, works mint. car stops great! i'm stoked. also took her for a good blast down the highway tonite. prolly a 50 mile round trip, didn't skip a beat.
you guys are crankin over there!!! was gonna take a ride over sat nite with rich, and dana but fagged out.. would like to soon though!
nah, like you said they were gonna get into that mount, hard, so it's gotta go. i got some more front end work i need to get done in the future so i'll tear it all apart when i have a lil bit more time & $ to do so. just trying to get this thing ready for a cross state blast on friday. yeah man, pretty much anytime. we are always there, sure seems that way anyways.
got el-cheap-o ebay radiator in today. out with the old had to make up these sweet brackets to mount el-cheapo. these were left over from a customers $500 be-cool aluminum radiator install job. i'll use the leftover exspensive brackets on my junk thank you very much. i had to use these brakets cuz el-cheapo's brakets were bolted to the radiator for a "back side" of the radiator support mount, no big deal except the nice lil chineese boy who built el-cheapo decided these nuts needed to be welded to the bolts making it impossible to flip them with out risk of damage to my delicate junk. fit's nice, looks good, car goes down the road at an almost unbelievable 130 degrees, it only cost me $160, & the piece of shit doesn't even leak! all set for milltown with time to spare to wash this heap!
