Well now that the job didn’t hurt the car or him, explain to him what could have gone wrong and why.
For a long time I used to think “why does my dad to things that way, be easier to do it this way”.
Also, I hope those are pics he sent you, not ones you took during the work;)

  2. It took longer to rig up the strap than to use a slide hammer.

Hey I was being serious. Necessity is the mother of invention. Used a come a long and a tree for years, and I've straightened automotive structure in the same fashion for 40 years. No derogatory comments coming from me.

Take him out back and beat the **** out of him. Just kidding,;) I think you will show him the error of his ways in a appropriate manner. Glad there was no carnage.:)

So funny! Not that everyone of us hasn't done something cringeworthy in our past...

Me, no! Never! Well, there was that time with the lady contortionist, the egg beater, and a jug of nonfat milk... but I'm much better now!

I just laughed when I saw your post. I have done way worse things than that, and fortunately
lived another day. That is a
    pretty a great post.

I have used a chain and an old flywheel to pull an axle.

I earned my nickname " lightning bolt Lumpy" many years ago for doing stupid **** at the hot rod shop I hung out at as a kid. But in my defense I was in my early 20s :p

First thing I thought was why didn't he tie the strap to the mini-bike, if he put the slack right it would've popped the axle at the same time the mini-bike hit the curb and he went ***hole over elbows onto the lawn.

If you zoom in on the stands you’ll see how wide the base is. My Dad made those more than 50 years ago.

Ptthh! Your son is just an amateur! He needs to step up.... Oh, wait...

I always told my son, the more it cost, or the harder it is to fix a screw up, the better you remember it.

This one didn't cost anything because nothing got damaged. The next time, all he is going to remember is "This worked the 1st time." If he gets by with it the 2nd or maybe even the 3rd time, he is going to be thinking "This is the way I've always done it and nothing bad ever happened." Then he will come on the HAMB and tell someone how he always pulls axle shafts out, and someone will call him on it. His facts are, "This is the way...." Well, you know, we have all read it, and many have written it because its been our life experience.

I've pulled axles with a log chain. Do the slide hammer now. There is a tool that fits between the axle flange and the backing plate that when tightened will push the axle out.

  25. Now iffn it was me, Ida just loosened the bearing retainer on that side (about a half inch gap) remounted the tire and wheel, and drove that sum***** around the neighborhood making left hand turns til the damned axl just walked out on its own. Seen it done that way on a utube... Those Packuhstany guys can do anything!!

That would have been a mess if he had pulled the car off those jack stands.
I've got a home made slide hammer that I picked up somewhere that would get the job done but for years I doubled up a log chain and hooked it to one of the studs through a link and cracked the whip and usually got the axle out. Real redneck stuff I learned in Auto shop cl*** when I was 15. We had a nice slide hammer in the tool room too and that is what I had the kids use when I taught the cl***.

The redneck way I was taught was to take an old axle and put its flange between the brakes and the flange of the axle you were trying to remove. Then give the give the end of the old axle a sharp upward jerk.
