Anyone out there come across an issue where: after you've replaced the speedo cable and hooked it all back up to find that once you get up to about 10mph or so, you start to get this sound from your speedometer like someone kicked on the garbaged disposal? The speedometer works, and the cable spins at speed when it is disconnected. Only when the two are joined...that's when my speedometer starts barking at me! Anyone know the cause? troubleshooting?.. Thanks, Nolan
internal lubrication has dried out..or entirely gone.. a light lithieum (sp) grease will some times do the trick..but you gotta take it apart to put very little on the moving (clock like ) parts
get power graphite from the auto parts store and put it in the top and let it work it's way down and it will stop.
Nice! Thanks fellas. Guess I was just quick to put it in with no foreplay (lube) prior. I'll give it a-go. Thanks -Nolan
I was having similar issues with the speedo on my wifes 54 Chevy and a gentleman over at www.chevytalk.com walked me through the repair. I pulled the speedo from it's housing and removed the br*** plug (which is lying on the vise) from the opening in the housing indicated by the V. After that I pulled out the wick which as dry as a bone. I soaked the wick in some 3 in 1 oil for awhile and flipped it over so the other end would ride on the pin that goes through the speedo. I also added the 3 in 1 to the hole in the housing and spun it around a few times. So far it's working just fine.
hey thanks alot for that tech..I have a 53 chevy so thats something to look into. good to keep in the back of your mind
Thanks for that info, aceuh! My '53 needle bounces all over the place and sometimes makes a funny noise. If I'm a lucky boy maybe that'll fix it.
I was told that if they jump or bounce that it's also possible for the gear(s) that turn the odometer to be sticking or stripped. If oiling the wick doesn't fix things you may have to go in deeper and clean and lube the gears for the odometer. I got the wick lubed and called it good...I didn't go any further.
When that happens with me, I clean the cable with thinner & take & coat it with vasoline. If it's bounceing, boy disconect it before it brakes the needle.
Powdered graphite is the proper lubricant for speedo cables. If you have any type of grease or oil on the cable, you outta clean it off before giving it a bath in the graphite. Especially if you live in an area where it gets chilly and grease and oil tends to become viscous! Or... you can do it your way. But that's the way I learnt it.
I also pulled my cable from the housing and cleaned it up with some brake cleaner (or something of the sort). Reinserted it in the housing and squirted speedometer cable lube in one end until it came out the other.
I am having a similar issue. On cold mornings the needle jumps all over the place and howls at me - I was thinking that I should stick a s**** in it's mouth so it wouldn't swallow it's tongue while it was having seizures.. It was Ok in the afternoon once it warmed up... but now it's stuck going 1000 mph. The odometer still spins. Am I F-ed?
