Projects My Spurgin/Giovanine inspired 1925 Chev roadster build thread

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by Jimmy B, May 2, 2010.

  1. Thanks that build will be on the go again in the new year! On my black '25 I have come too far to stop now plus I kind of like this car.

    5/32" sounds right.

    hey hey looking good.

  3. Thanks BCT.

I have the rear suspension set up, now for the disclaimer: I went with the triangulated 4 bar only to get this car done, I didn't really want to but it was the best available option. The bellypan will hide the suspension so from the outside when finished most people wont know.

Since I already have the new roadster in this thread I will continue to post about it in this thread to make it a double build thread. That way my decisions on the black roadster to make it more of a driver will become clear as I will use the newly fabricated ch***is and body to build a close copy of the original Spurgin/Giovanine roadster which will be less practical to drive.

I'm really interested in the rear suspension. I am going to use a very similar set up on my '26 with 1/4 eliptics. Did you build two new frames? The two cars confuse me sometimes but I like what you are doing with both.

  6. I decided the coil overs and 4-bar was the best option for this the 1/4 elliptic is another good choice, there are some good threads on the HAMB about 1/4 elliptic rear suspension.

The only ch***is I have fabricated from scratch is the one for the new roadster. The ch***is for the black roadster is same ch***is that I started with back in 2006. It looks new with all the boxing but is original Chev.

    Thanks Glenn.

The part that scares me the most is trying to ***emble all the pieces of '26 Chevy sheet metal into a body. I want functioning doors and trunk. I'm lucky to have almost all of the wood in pretty good shape. I may leave some of it like in the doors and along the trunk lid.

Your thread is my Build Bible. I have found several others also but they are all Fords. Malcolm's rear suspension is inspiring but I think mine will have the lower bars parallel to the springs with shackles on the springs. That allows the springs to just be springs.

Do you think I need to box my '28 Chevy frame? The Chevy 153 will probably be putting out around 175 HP.

  8. Keep some of the wood but Floor, A & B pillars should really be steeled out so they are rigid. I am glad my build is able to provide helpful info, My build really has been a steep learning curve. If you are using the stock front suspension with the 153 I would say it is ok to leave the frame unboxed. with the rear suspension you will need to box the rear portion of the frame with the 1/4 elliptic suspension you mentioned.

Have you thought about running a small Japanese pickup rear springs and diff? Boxing the frame wouldn't be necessary and you will have open drive and be able to use 6-stud wheels if you are wanting to run 16" Chev wheels.

Thanks Jimmy for the good advice. I am starting with 19" Chevy wire wheels. It will have Chevy type leaf springs up front. I plan on a T-85 OD trans with a Jeep floor shifter. I have a Dana 44 posi with 4.27 gears. That should give the 4 Cylinder some help to get going and the OD will get it down the road. I will box the rear of the frame as you suggest. I'm also now thinking of a Whippet shell and I hope to channel it the width of the frame. I'm looking hard at the front springs outside the frame like the early S&G. We'll see when I get it all in the shop in a few weeks. It'll be a driver and it has 2 miles of rough steep dirt/rocky road before any pavement. Thanks again.

I like the new grill. How bid you form the outside?

I admit to confusion as well. Thanks for clearing that up Jimmy.

  12. If you want to run the springs like the Spurgin/Giovanine roadster might be worth finding a '27-28 Chrysler as that is what it ran. Also if you are tall channelling will make for a cramped ride.

I made a template and marked it out on some 1/8" plate cut out with the grinder. Clamped the two pieces together and grinded down get the two side the same and smooth welded the two sides together. This is for the Black roadster later on I will make one for the new roadster.

Sorry for confusion. I will refer to the old roadster as the Black roadster. the second roadster as the New roadster.

  13. I had some parts sandblasted and undercoated, now I'm just waiting for front wheel bearings and brake shoes and I will ***emble the front end. Also found the Holden flywheel I have been looking for sitting on a Ford engine in the paddock. I have the 4speed in the shed so I just need a new clutch, if I can find a corona 5 speed I will go with that.

That looks good. What kind of material is it? Regular undercoat? I have parts that hide too.

  15. Black etch primer, the sandblaster is a local rodder and he primes the blasted pieces which saves the parts from flash rust.

  16. I cut the perch pins down.

Also stripped the axle back to bare metal using a wire cup on the 5" grinder and then a paint stripper pad. I will paint the parts over the weekend.
