I bought my first welder a few months ago, but until today had only used it on scrap for practice. Today I decided it was time to start some rust repair on my heap. I'm real happy with the outcome. I made a few mistakes, but learned from them for next weekend. Constructive criticism is appreciated. Before After Before Ready to weld
I tried to ignore the body rot on my car for two years, but it got round to time to do it and I went though the same learning curve. made a few mistakes, took a few lessons from posts on the Hamb, browsed a few internet sites like Ron Covells, and hooked into the body work. It wasn't easy, but got easier as I practised and learnt. I just bought a leather bag and a 'metal bashing' hammer, and plan to make a small English wheel sometime soon, so things can only get better.
Best way to learn IMO. Just dive in let 'er rip. When you've made some mistakes and can't recover ask someone who knows and practice, practice, practice. Frank
I even bit the bullet and chopped the top! You got to remember, I'd never touched any sheet metalwork before this.
I have a ton more to go. The passenger side looks the same. I need both rockers inner and outer, floors, trunk pan, area under gravel guard on rear fenders. I'll be busy for a while. The main problem I ran into today is I ground part of that lip around the trunk too thin and when I tried to weld it I just burned through. I'll need to come up with a solution for that one.
Buy youself a small metal break and shrinker/stretcher. You'll then be able to make your own replacement trunk lips. Frank
