I don’t know about you guys but every time I take my rod out I can’t help but feel that it transports me back to a better time. It instantly takes my mind off all the stuff that’s going on in the world today and my only focus is on the rumble of the engine, the sensation of speed and the open road ahead…..Life is good. It seems to have the same affect on the other drivers on the road as well. Instead of today’s normal hurry up routine of blowing their horns and flashing the bird because they’re in such a hurry most people smile and wave or give thumbs up when they see a rod cruising down the street. It’s as though they too were taken back to a simpler time. Why is it that an old car can have such a positive effect on those around it?

 

When I lived in CT 10 years ago I was to the point where taking my car out was getting me too nervous to enjoy it! Along the Shoreline between Bridgeport and New Haven the drivers were just plain NUTS! I felt as though they were coming at me from all directions and the traffic laws were no longer in effect. Too Crazy, had to move for my sanity!

 

Same thing here in my area... It's the kids with the tuners that drive like idiots..

 

When I see another Rod going down the road and mines at home I get the urge to get it out for a cruise because it puts you in a different world, you lose the sense of the hustle and bussel we live in everyday.......sort of a calming effect

 

You bet! It's a quick trip to a better world.

 

Amen Brother. Aint it the truth. I don't have an answer for your question and don't care either, but it's all true. Little kids point, old folks smile it's great...

 

Always the ULTIMATE Time Machine ! The ride. The handling. The open-window smell of exhaust fumes, tar, and, the other assorted smells that waft in with the wind in a non-airconditioned element. The feel of that big, thin-rimmed, wheel in your hands.

The sounds and noises of the country/city...wherever you are. The view through the windshield of a decades-old machine...the same view that the original owner had all those years ago. And, oh, if this car could talk, what tales of all those years it could tell !

I've always thought of my cars as the Cowboy thought of his horse: a noble steed to take care of, love, and, depend on. Chosen carefully and ridden with respect for a long, long, time.

I call my '40 my "time machine" too... I think you're right- the worries of the world melt away to the sweet burble of a nicely tuned flathead... and Summer's only 4 months away!
