Well, I have to admit. Nosurf always puts on a great BBQ.
Personal perticipation is encouraged and rewarded with a great time.
Greezy stopped by on Friday to caravan out with us in his beautiful '40 coupe. We finally got on the road ( a little behind schedule) around 2 or so.
First stop was Rosedale's BBQ for some lunch and sauce to take with us. We wanted to show Nosurf what real KC BBQ sauce was like.
After food we headed out. It didn't take too many blocks when I realized I had something wrong with the roadster.
It had developed a bad wobble with the driver's side rear wheel.
Long story short, the lugs ont he adapters were loose. After a side-of-the-road fix ( I only broke one socket...) and the help of Greezy and his tools, we were on our way.
Everything was fine with the exception of the 60 mph breeze out of the South. Made driving an open car without a windshield, busy work.
Just on the other side of Manhatten, KS, I notice the tailpipe on the '40 let loose.
    Another stop and another fix.
Then it was back to the wind tunnel to Abeline, KS.
After two and one half tanks of gas in the roadster, we were pulling into Nosurf's driveway.
Then we commenced to 'pulling pork'. I don't know who thought og this process, but I can think of many more (easy) ways to serve a pig.
I have to hand it to Nosurf. He realy has determination when it comes to pork. I guess I'm lazy...
I brought my wife and youngest son (Max) on the trip (following behind me in the econo-box with heat and a winshield...) and Mrs. Nosurf was kind and generous enough to take pity on my wife and offer the 'Futon Room' as sleeping accomodations (thanks!).
Saturday morning came way too early and Nosurf was running on just a couple hours of sleep, but was stoked to make the run to Marquette, KS for breafast and a browse of the vintage motorcycle museum.
So off we went. Nosurf leading the way in his hopped up A coupe and me following behind. I don't know where everyone else was because Nosurf set a pace that kind of left most everyone else behind.
Unfortunatly, I was not included int he latter group.
We stopped in a small town to let the others catch up and take pictures.
Once again, Nosurf sets the pace, only probelm is, my coil wire decides to 'fall off'.
I still can't explain that one. I pull to the side of the road with everyone else behind me waiting for me to get my act together.
Simple fix and I'm on the road again.
This time, apparantly, I'm on a mission.
When you've spent 3-4 hours in an open car without a winshield, much after 30pmh or so, it all seems the same (did I mention that I haven't hooked up the speedo?).
In the outlands of Western Kansas, many roads are straight and free from traffic. This one was also, or so I thought. As a speck on the horizon, I saw Nosurf's coupe and I set sail for it.
The only thing is that once I be-bopped over the rise, I spied a truck on the side of the road about half a mile ahead. The little voice inside my head, told me that was a cop. "Really?", I said. Yes was the response.
    Did I let up?
    No.
My worst suspicions were confirmed when I came close as the pretty bright blue and red lights came on as I passed by him.
I pull over and in his quiet, erserved, but polite sort of way, the deputy tells me that he clocked me doing 96 in a 55.
    Uh-oh. I'm thinking, I'm going to jail.
He says 'We'll get this taken care of so you can go on your way".
So I take the opportunity to snap a pic or two since this is the first time my roadster has had any 'legal' intervention of this sort.
    You know, for prosparity...
Well he gives me my citation ans letsme know that I can take care of it by mail. Thanks.
Kerry stopped within my sight to let me know that I will have someone to follow (since I don't know where we are going) and I take of again. Just a few yards past Kerry, I see the rest of the crowd (sansa Nosurf) had pulled on the side of the road (out of sight) and waited for me and the verdict. Thanks, again...
    I get a standing ovation...Thanks, I think...
Back on the road and into Marquette. Breakfast and the museum.
We arrive about the same time that a group of bikers showup in town for the museum, too. They are a group that call themselves 'Bikers Against Child Abuse'. I found out later that one of thier group did not make it home that evening. Very Sad.

Man what a cool place, the museum. Who would of thought that out in the middle of nowhere, ther would be such a great place.
    1912 Simplex, 1911 Henderson's all great stuff.
Back to the road and back to the park for Nosurf's famous pulled pork BBQ. great time to hang out with friends, cool cars, and good food.

I'm sure that Hellraiser make a lasting impression on the 'kid'. Too cool.

Then on to Nosurf's farm for movies and snacking.
Late night and a hotel room was in order. My wife didn't want to wear our our welcome and she was looking forward to a bed instead of the tent I suggested.

The trip home went off without a hitch other than loosing Greezy right after we got on the hiway.
Back to 60+ mph winds, but this time there were tornado watches and rain to dodge.

A big thanks to Nosurf, his lovely wife and family for putting up with all of us and invading thier home. Words can not express what gratitute and respect we have for you and yours. There is no bigger heart than his.
I can never begin to repay your hospitality.
Good to see old friends and make new ones.
Thanks Kerry, Greezy, BarnFindT, Hellraiser and all the others (I didn't catch everyone's handle) for making it a great time.

Next year I need to drive something with a roof...

Great pics Robin, I figured you'd take some nice ones so I wasnt to worried about getting to many...he he. Everytime Id try to catch up the wind was pushing the 40 real bad, so I decided to keep an even pace at around 60-65, was more bearable at that speed. Made it back to Higginsville Mo before I had to stop for gas. Took 2.5 tanks going out and 1.5 coming home. Enjoyed the weekend very much.

    We were worried about you.
As bad as the wind was in the flatlands of Kansas, the worst turbulence I encountered was in the West Bottoms in Kansas City, MO.
I thought we were going 65...honestly...

Great story and pic's R. Sorry to hear bout your run in with the State Patrol, but kinda proud of you too, nice land speed documentation. Id say you get your tough card punched for driving your roadster through that weather with no top and no windshield. " Good On Ya"
I also love the black 40. Gary

  14. Being an old hippy toker that is a "420" even I don't like to see!! I hope I can get my junker back on the road this year and go to this event next time. That bunch is one of the coolest on the planet, Jeff (hiBoy32) was our Omaha connection to this event, I can't believe someone would sit soda cans on his coupe with the work he has put on that paint job!! Really great to see one of my heros, HellRaiser there in the super coupe. Thanx for the great coverage.-Vagabonds are the stuff!!~Sololobo~

Excellent pics! Sooner or later I'll get ours downloaded off the camera. I think Lacie got a good one of the deputy pulling Robin over.

Well, what more can I add to some of the posts about Nosurf's BBQ week-end gathering. It was a fun time, as hot rodding should be.

Something that should be noted is, this was really a family affair. The kids were really enjoying themselves. (Jay the only other thing I can think of for the younger set is to have a full out and out kids farm animals petting area. Chasing chickens and getting chased by chickens maybe is not their highlight of activities):D

Thankfully Jay, your story about the snake's demise on the wire made me feel better, than knowing it was still on the loose up in the tree.

One of the things that makes Nosurf's BBQ so enjoyable is the get out and drive to somewhere. Surprisingly there is stuff to see in Kansas. Then the return for the eats, movies on the side of a barn at night, where else but Nosurfs?

There's just no substitute for good ole mid-west hospitality. As I've said before in some of my posts,

IT'S FOR THE FUN OF IT

I saw three Simplex Servi-cycles in that collection..1 restored and the other two not...pretty hard to find those anymore. I wonder if he still has an original working light bulb in the one that was restored?

    Sweet shots - Thanks!
