Here are a few pix of my frame in the works... This frame was a 1.5ton huge piece of ****... we cut the damn thing down from like 6in thick to the stock thickness... its hard to see here but oh well... We also c-notched the front end and made some lower shackles out of some ****... its pretty low... ridehieght is about 3in. I am 4linking the rear and using airbags for speedbumps, driveways and e-brake. When the air is out the frame will sit on the ground... also can me a theft reducing item as well... The wheels should be on it Sat... if we get all the brackets made and welded on... I hope. What do you think? blake
They dont have hotrods in Taipei... they do have 1000000000 ****ty mopeds. i just rode a 6.9 earthquake in a 12th story hotel roon & think I may die on my flight back... if I dont make it, you can have your cracked flathead back...
It ROLLS! I set the cab on the frame today to get a first time feel of what it's going to look like! ****IN stoked! What do you think?
Looks cool! I have had plans bouncing off the side of my skull for a similar "beater" type project with knobby tires and all. Where's you get the tires? Coker? So far I have purchased a 36 Chevy truck, 5 terraplane 16 inch artillery wheels, and a 59 Lincoln (might as well keep the trend going). Does your spring mount on the lower leg of the wishbone? Got any pics of that?
Thanks... The tires are Firestone and yeah we made a weird mount for the spring on the front end... got another 2-3 inches lower that way... I will get pix soon. blake
that thing is RAD. how did you get the upsweep in the frame rails..did you heat or pie slice or ?? looks very cool.. ..seeing these pics is makes me so anxious to get my new truck project home..
Thanks for the comments... The frame I got with the cab was a 1 1/2 ton beast... we sliced out a section and welded it back to 4" from about 7"... we took the section out of the top portion of the rail which left a rad upsweep. Hope you understand... its hard to explain... I just had a couple beers at HOOTERS after a nice day in the shop. Today I mocked up the cab with the bed... looks cool but have to adjust it and throw a lil skirt under it because the bed is too shallow... yeah shallow like the girls at HOOTERs tonight haha. I have to say that I have had a huge help from the boys at Kingpin Kustoms in Upland CA... they do sweet work! blake
You can go **** your RAT with your ROD... hahaha never call it that again and we can still hang out. yeah man call me... I need to make some plans dude... cant wait to hit Vegas with you! Too bad my truck is not going to make it this year... I guess Paso will be the first voyage!
I like it where it's at now. If you channel it are you going to lower the bed too? I would only channel it 3" that way the 1" of frame hanging below the body will protect it. What size motor you gonna run? Your spring mount up front looks a little weak in the pics. It may be Ok, but that pic makes it look like it may not be enough. Clark
Well... I am going to run a crate 305 with a 3x2 setup and zoomies for starters... that is all my budget allows for now. Yeah the springmount is going to be a gamble and may need some work after a few potholes from all the ****in rain we have had here this year. I think I will go for the 3in channel to keep the body safe while creaping around on the ground. I will hopefully have a nice shakedown period to workout the bugs before Paso. blake
Nothing wrong with a SBC! I sorta wish I wouldn't have got into this nailhead for my 32. It's costing a fortune. Can you mount your spring off of the batwing? Please don't think I'm just tryin to bust your balls. From the pics that mount just doesn't look safe. I could be wrong, it may just be the picture. Clark
I love the feedback... that is why I am posting this ****.... I will look further into the mount now you have got me thinkin about it. I am all for safety. I will try to get better pix of the thing. Thanks for your input. blake
That looks great. I wouldn't channel it, it might look to "cartoonish" and we all know what that gets ya around here! The only thing I would do is shorten the bed to right behind the back tires. Good job man!
Channel the cab if you wish. You already have the frame slung retarded low and the rear axle is on airbags, so it would fit with the theme. I personally think low hot rods are silly, but what do I know? You already made a few decisions declaring this to be a lowrider hot rod, so the decision to channel the cab should be based on that. Regarding the front spring mounts, they look dangerous to me, chiefly because you are unnecessarily introducing conflicting torquing forces in that area. The hanger receiver is perched out on an arm coming off what I am ***uming is the shock mount. In addition to the spring movement and the shackle movement, the mount arm is going to want to move rotationally around the point to which it is welded. There's nothing to brace it or counteract the rotational force there. As Clark pointed out, a logical place to mount it would be the batwing. You could add a gusset since there will be more surface area to tie into. And given that much or your truck will hang below the scrub line, you might want to avoid having front end problems. You want to contradict the "rat rod" label, not reinforce it.
Yeah man... I will look into that mount tomorrow... I don't really want to race this thing... airbags dont race. I only intend in driving it around and having fun... I agree with the other comment... I dont want a cartoon look either. I have always liked low cars so that is what I went for. I do want a safe one though. I value all opinions for sure! thanks~ blake
I think your truck looks perfect as is!!! Back in the 50's I think lots of guys channeled their hot rods, because it was a quick way to lower a car (some cars were channeled 10")!!! Back then they hadn't figured out how to do suspension mods to get a car really low. Now guys like you have figured it out!!! If you really want to channel it, I think the 3" idea is a good one. But if it was mine, I would leave it as is......with the extra 3 or 4" of interior room.
