    What an era for Hotrods...
Can anybody describe this exhaust pipe end. Is it a decorative wire flare at exit? I see it also has a second pipe going under. Is that a crossover to balance or exiting to back duals? Just curious.

    What he said ^^^
    Fantastic stuff, pure gold.

  3. There's another - better show pic of his roadster....he did all - should I say - he said....there's some chrome on it he didn't do - it had yet to get the Dick Bertolucci paint of 1955/65 - Dick was a school buddy and his uncle ran with my pop's - have a pic of them two with my pop's gow job - and not sure who did the stitching on the interior or cover. If it was fab work like these pipes and the ones he made for the Olds motor - he did it - and like he said he put 6 cyl flathead Ford valves in the flathead he built in 1949 - because they were bigger !

  4. Okay - from what he told me - the 1956 BVille lakester entry was not really his idea - put the club's - they wanted the new chassis body to run his GMC motor. He thought he had it worked out the motor bugs and the T would have run better - still the dash plate says - C Lakester - 182.27....they were knocking on that 200 mph door. Never really talked about it though - he would soon move to that 1/4 mile....first the books he left for me....
He never showed me these - so I have to guess - maybe he thought I wouldn't get the BVille plates - sooo -
So this 1956 annual that had my name on it.....
He marked their time for the 1955 meet on a page -
Then the next page....all that stood out was the "Glass Slipper" time's of 181 ?
The Slipper was sponsored by the Capital Speed Shop so I think there was some rilevery - not sure at this time if it was running the flathead or had gone to the Chey motor... 1956 hot rod annual.jpg 1955 results Bville lwf.jpg glass slipper 1955 BVille.jpg

  5. This magazine he left mentions the lakester as a dragster - not sure - the pics look like the salt tires....and with out the exhaust he made for BVille.....kinda looks unfinished - and if I had to say...it does look like a shorter chassie.

There's a color pic of the lakester in Dean Moon's book - he had nice thing's to say about it....have the book some where and it was the first I had heard of it. When I showed my uncle - he wasn't to thrilled to talk about it...he said something about that T body... Dragster GMC 1..jpg Dragster GMC 2.jpg

Please note - Leroy Semas won the Custom Class with his 1937 Chevy !!!!! And don't forget Buck winning the roadster class !!!!!

    Hello,

Nice treasure trove of racing goodies. When we were getting our newly built 292 ci SBC ready in our backyard garage, we were contemplating which new/old 671 kit to get. The Howard Cam Chain Drive was out and the new 671 Isky Gilmer Kit just came out for the SBC.

So, we had these little guides and calculators to play around with during school classes. My English and Science classes took a beating because I was enthralled running various scenarios on these little hand held calculators. It was like having a hand held computer back when computers were auditorium size machines.

We used these little guides, ran different ratios to see which drive gear was best for us and our SBC Willys. We settled on the Isky Gilmer 671 belt drive for our SBC. We had our own 671 with mods from Reath Auto on 10th street and Cherry Ave. This was 57 years ago. The guides are probably sitting around in my late brother’s stuff in Santa Barbara.

We must have calculated using these devices, quite well, as our 671 SBC Willys ran hard and fast. We were .5 sec off of the National C/Gas record before …August 13, 1960.

Oct 1960 Bones Balogh’s version of the same Isky Gilmer Belt 671 Kit on an SBC. Ours look the same except for the fuel lines and his neat throttle set up.

  16. Thanks Jnaki for your insight and history.....!

  19. Wanted to share my uncle's first build....as my pop's had fleet trucks he took care of - the story I was told was - one of the fleet owners wanted a new motor from GM for a fleet truck and my uncle was able to get a slightly worn old motor to build. He got a Chevy Cabriolet and with that fresh Chevy powered roadster - begin to make some older guys take notice. This was his High School ride and these older guys - with him would form the Capital Auto Club - Thunderbolts. These photos were taken at our family's F street house which would be my first visit to Sacramento in 1957.
My youngest uncle is in the driver seat for a photo op.....notice the two-two's..... first in driveway.jpg First one 1.jpg Un Bob 1st 1.jpg

  20. Going to post up some early photos of the roadster build at the shop oat 19th and Q in Sacramento - that's what most of the photo's say - with one having 1948/49 on it.
The one photo of it in the shop is the only insight I have into my pop's last shop....the first is the 48/49 photo...
I'm confused as I see the original type windshield with out the rear end bars....
Then there's a pic with the Duvall type windshield he made and with those chrome rear radius bars which I do not see in later photos...
And the street photo appears to still have missing the Sharp heads/Navarro intake........ Under constru 3 in street.jpg Under constru 1 in shop.jpg Under constru 4 outside shop.jpg Under constru 5 with nurf bars.jpg Under constru 2 in street.jpg

  21. The shop was at 19th and Q and I think there's a pic of the roadster when it came back from Bonnieville with that Reliable Electric in the back ground.
And the later picture is from about 1955 - at the same shop....you can see that window.... Scan10_0010.jpg Scan8_0008.jpg
