my VW rod project

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by nicanor, Nov 21, 2003.

  1. OK, before anyone says crap about my project, this isn't your typical VW project. I started with a '56 chopped Oval window bug

Some may remember my custom dash I did, using a '49 Ford dash (my first welding project so not picture perfect):

I channelled the backbone chassis 4.5", sectioned 3.5", semi- 'Z'd front frame and relocated the body back 9". I took out about 13" total from stock height (about 46" high)

    Started with this:

    Cut into pieces:

    And the current status:

And a photoshop on how it should look once done:

Planning on putting split windshield pop-outs from modifying a Powerwagon frame and a few other plan changes from the photoshop. More details on my site at www.runtrod.com

All this from a guy who couldn't weld a year ago.
Suddenly I feel more inadequate than usual.
Looks good Nick.Did you post this on the Resto Nazi board too? [IMG]

My little brother [heavy VW fanatic] just sent me the above photo to check out....musta posted it on the VW boards too, eh? He's got a 57 chop-top in flat black with VW power. Lives in Medford, Oregon
Here's a 'shopped' photo that could be a kick ass coupe.

Nicanor....great job with the bug so far. I've seen a few attempts to make these things look like hot rods, and most fail miserably. I like what you got goin' on.

And to begin by cuttin' up a vintage oval???

    That ROCKS!!! [IMG]

    Keep us posted! [IMG]

    I like it.
One suggestion for the side shot Photoshop, see what it would look like with the B pillar leaning forward, to even out the glass area a little.
Just a suggestion, it might not look better at all.

Your bug looks great. I love the look! What motor are you going to be running in her. I used to do a lot with Porsche and VW motors, and I do have quite a few high performance parts laying around. As well as things like rubber gaskets, etc.. Just let me know if you are in need of something.

    Yeah...its workin' for me!
I like leaning the post as well. With a little extra work that roof kink could disappear too. I think its incredible what you guys do with your little bugs!

Hey, this is a good thread to ask a question on bugs...
I just scored a bug gas tank. It has an inside the trunk fuel filler with a big (but dented) VW cap and a reserve lever on the fuel outlet. Good shape overall but the fuel outlet is pulled thru the tank from an impact during storage. Looks like an easy fix or retrofit.
What year tank am I dealing with and whats the size in gallons?
I might just use it for patch panel material considering the nice matching curves it has. [IMG] Good idea or?
