I have a set of wide white bias plies that the white has yellowed. I tried steel wool so far but it didn't work. The bleach white scares me. Any suggestions on how to whiten my yellow?

Do NOT use anything containing bleach!!! Use formula 409 and sandpaper. Yes, sandpaper! Do NOT use bleach...

Bleach will dry-out and eventually crack, and destroy the whitewall.

I've always had great luck with Westley's Bleach White...never experienced any cracking...
I guess it depends on how old the tires are...
I've always used it on newer tires that have turned yellow, (10 years old or less) without any problems.

    Good Luck.

220 grit. 150 grit if you have deep marks.

I agree with totallycustom, I have 1 year old whitewalls on my car and they have cracked/checked from using the bleach white. I also live in a very dry climate so that might have something to do with it.
I have heard that coker sells a really good whitewall cleaner.

I don't think it works well at all.

Wesleys + Scotch Brite (kitchen sponges) = no problems here. Keep it off any inintended surfaces though.

I used to use Comet cleanser on a wet bristle brush. Then just rinse. Used it for years with no problems.

+1 on Comet(Ajax also works) and a brush.
    SOS pads work well also.
Try Simple Green and a scotch brite pad too.

I use magic erasers and a cheap cleaner called Spray Power. The yellow just runs off, tires look brand new.

I have a 66 t-bird with 20 year old tires that I use bleach-white and a scrub brush on and no checking or cracking. I do,however rinse each tire good after scrubbing.

Try Kingsford charcol lighter fluid, it will blow your mind how good it cleans them ,its also great on tar spots on your paint and any glue over spray on your upholstery I have used it on leather and vinyl and it cleans with out messing any thing up. it takes that sticky stuff off your windsheild from those event stickers too, Plus it only cost a couple of bucks for a 1/2 gallon of it.

you can buy Goof Off in an industrial strength. It works great on whitewalls, sticker glue, bugs, etc. I am thinking it isn't too far off from the Kingsford chemistry

Another vote for the Comet/Ajax and a stiff brissle brush, has worked for more than 55 years for me starting with my Schwinn 2 speed in 1954.

I've always used Wesleys with good results, but if you dont wear rubber gloves it will make your fingers dry up pretty good! make me wonder what it will do if you don't wash it off the tires.

It sounds like what really takes place here is you are not really going to clean the stains off. You are actually going to scrub off the top layer of yellowed rubber. The bleach would penetrate the rubber and clean it but harm it, the scrub pads and sand paper would sand off the top layer of rubber exposing the whiter rubber below?.

Exactly. Go to DiamondBack Tires website and read what they say about bleach products used on whitewalls.

I use wesleys on cars valued at over $1,000,000. Never an issue. I also use it to get blackwalls blacker.

Mr Cleans Magic Eraser / Westley's Bleach White

  29. I've used Westleys Bleach White for years on my '36 and elsewhere. I've had the best of luck with it. If it does damage the rubber over a long time I haven't found it. Anyway, I hope to wear the tires out before that.................

  30. Same here-- on a wet scrub brush. Works every time.
