Have acquired this gearbox thinking it would fit an early fathead but am now not sure. Can anyone ID it for me.
Thanks chaps - am new in the flat head field and suspected I had acquired a pinch of shit. Should have done my homework first. At least it was a very cheap learning curve.
First gear in that thing is a real stump puller, and the removable side cover is for mounting a power take-off. The mounting bosses on the shifter top are for the big truck parking brake lever/ratchet mechanism. It will bolt right up to '32-'48 flatheads except 60 HP. This trans is the hot ticket if your flathead is going into a wrecker or log truck.
I have two of these gearboxes (transmissions) and if anyone who want them, they are FREE. Come and pick them uo. Too heavy to ship. In a few weeks hey go to the scrap yard.
The later versions of these had a removable bell housing typically called a "hogshead". Many T-5 to flathead conversions use these "hogsheads". You can probably cut the front of that particular transmission case off and machine it for a T-5 conversion too. I am fascinated with the heavy duty u-joint and rear motor mount on this transmission. The rear motor mount looks suspiciously like a 32 rear motor mount. If you decide to junk the transmission, would you mind sending me the u-joint parts? I'll pay shipping. If it is a 32 rear motor mount, someone will be willing to purchase it from you. If not, I'd be interested in it as a curiosity too.
