Maybe it was sold at Sears? I found pictures of Sears bicycle speedometers with the same crossed flags on the dial, I'm thinking their automotive gauges had a similar look.
From the wiring and the date in the case, that looks like it might be an early meter type tachometer. Those usually require a separate sending unit, and the head is useless without it. I can't be sure, but from what I see, I think it's a good possibility. Most modern motor tachs have 4 wires : Red - Power, Black - Ground, White - Light, Green - Tach signal and don't have a separate sender.
Thanks for the insights. I've never set up a sending unit tach before, but the shallow case and minimal electronics suggest that it might be one of those. However, I have dealt with Falcon Sprint, Rotunda, and Cyclone factory tachs that also have three wires but are self-contained. Two of the wires connect in line with the coil + wire at the ignition switch, with the remaining wire for the dash light. Which one is this? A good question for an electronics guy.
"2659-B vintage tachometer" didn't come up with anything. There is a Vintage Tachometer thread here. Judging by the wiring on the back (Thanks for the pics!!!) it looks like the Yellow wire is light feed, Orange or Red is signal and Brown is ground. VERIFY BEFORE CONNECTING! The lack of any adjustment for 4-6-8 means it's probably only for one application. Best of luck on ID'ing it, I'd suggest trying to find a vintage gauge repair place who would be able to confirm connections and may ID the works if the HAMB brain trust doesn't nail it.
A few things to note; 8K value. A 45 degree sweep. This as opposed to the 270 sweep of the other internal type. The sweep is low on the face. Most seem to be at or near the top of the face for this type. This one is similar, but not the same. I also saw a few Olds tachs from the 60s that shared the low short sweep. https://www.2040-parts.com/nos-1960...pm-factory-tachometer-c3rz-17a326-a-i1587334/ There are a bunch of threads like this here on the HAMB that ask about vintage tachs and how they are wired. I'd spend some time reading thru them to gain more info.
Looks very similar to this one on a HAMB auction from a few years back. What is that name, IMaTACH? I feel we're getting closer. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum...me-tachometer-gauge-with-pivot-mount.1047270/
