I posted a 49 olds to the interesting cars for sale thread that looked like it hade done some racing in its time and I can’t get this thing out of my head or wrap my mind around how it would work. It has vacuum advance which I believe would rule out a Mallory unit. It uses 2 coils and appears 2 have 2 pickup units on the rotor. @Paul ?
It's hard to see any detail in the picture that was posted, but it is a dual coil setup of some kind. It has two coils (obviously) and two condensers. It acts like two separate 4 cylinder distributors in one housing, with each set of points energizing the separate coils alternately. "Dave G" may be right that it is a "W&H DuCoil", but it's hard to tell from the picture, and I believe there were other brands offered. These types of distributors needed special caps with two coil towers and matching dual path rotors. They are special pieces and very hard to find these days (I think the Harmon-Collins pieces may be currently reproduced). This is not a Mallory because they did their "dual coils" differently (One coil with two primary windings, but only one secondary winding) allowing the use of regular caps and rotors. Some Mallory's were available with vacuum advance. Here's a better picture of (I believe) a "W&H Ducoil" with a couple of my condensers that was sent to me from @bchctybob. .
Just so you know, here's a picture of a Mallory "Double Life" distributor for a Rocket Olds. Also pictured is one of their special coils with two primary windings and one secondary. Notice the 3 primary connections, one for each set of points and one for power. An interesting thing about Mallory coils; back in the day 6 volt coils were black while 12 volt coils were red. Imagine trying to start a big high compression Olds on 6 volts.
My factory distributor with Pertronix unit works just fine. So why do I want one of these so bad? I wonder if anyone has tried using a flat top 2 piece cap on a factory distributor?
because they won’t fit. Different way of indexing and the diameter of the distributor bodies are different
They are seriously cool. Pair this up with a couple of Mallory "Best" coils, some Packard 440 wire and Rajah sparkplug terminals and you have an ignition that looks terrific, works well, and won't leave you stranded beside the road. Which is also probably the reason you're on this forum.
