That damage is called brinelling. Not uncommon on rotating kit freighted long distances.

Remember a guy in 80s, had a row of 409 Cranks hanging from bracket just like that. Some had chromed journals, real vintage stuff from 60s.

  3. I don't want to get to in the weeds here, but yes steam turbines to this day are motored over on a turning gear at about 1 revolution every seven minutes. Now days through hull shafting specifically CPP shafts aren't skinny. But they are aligned with radial offsets, mostly on the vertical plane.

yes brinelling is real, yes distortion can occur from not uniformly supporting a shaft. It doesn't happen quickly it's over a long period of time. Also while we are on the subject don't put your bearings split line down.

y'all can store you cams and crank shafts how you want, me at my pace I'm going vertical.

What do you mean by this? I assume you mean the shaft is bent slightly for vibration reasons like that torque tube 60s GM car who's name I can't recall right now.

  5. For life cycle management of wear down on water born bearings and thermal rise of the prime mover. The thermal & dynamic rise of the prime mover is typically up. So you intentionally put a vertical offset in the driveline to accommodate this. Basically in an effort for the bearings to carry the load they were intended. If one bearing is set too low the adjacent bearing will carry more load.
