Nailhead accelertaion problem?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by gears-n-grease, Sep 13, 2005.

  1. I put new plugs, wires, and a cap in my '63 401. I cleaned the carb.I adjusted the fast idle and leaned the carb out and I still have a stall in acceleration around 1500 rpm and 2k rpm. I dont think there is any exhaust leak that might be causing this. If I stand on the pedal it doesnt happen but if I drive normally the problem occurs. Got any suggestions? thanks

What carb are you running? Is the distributor advancing correctly?

It really sounds like a carb to me. But better to check everything else as well.

  3. stock rochester 4bbl- it has been a while since I played with non-electronic distribtuor. What is the best way to check the advancement? I am guessing it is the carb also- but it is my daily so I am trying to avoid rebuilding it now.

You might want to check the metering rods and the rest of the accelerating/high speed circuits in the carb. Be sure the metering rod wells are clean, check the accelerator pump plunger and squirters to make sure they're clean, and you can also set the accel. pump to give a different squirt. If it dumps all the gas at once, you're might have a lean spot right after it squirts. hope that helps if you havent fixed/replaced it by now.

I'm no Nailhead expert but it sounds like you need about 5 more carbs and a little more cam.
