OK, i need a new carb, or rebuild rather, I'm not to familiar with the nailhead (that's why I've been posting so many questions about dumb things, sorry) But my new question is can I put any carter afb on my 401 nailhead? I know they like lots of cfm so I wanted to upgrade to the 66 intake but not having luck finding that. So, meantime I think I'll just replace the stock carter with a bigger CFM Carter or Edelbrock compe***ion series carb. Is this possible, will I have to change the ignition, perhaps upgrade to HEI? Can I leave it as is?
What's wrong with the AFB that's on it? Napa stocks rebuild kits. Yes, the newer AFB's will bolt on. watch out for linkage issues (Kickdown) and you will have to use a different aircleaner or hack a bigger hole in yours. Four nails running and four more in the wings. Stevie G
The AFB that's on it has sat for a while and the accelerator pump and the choke don't work, the idle is rough and it's running rich. Thanks for the info. How difficault is rebuilding a carb? Special tools I need? Should a mechanic do it? That's why I was just going to buy a whole new one. Since the Mechanic I asked said rebuilding it would take all day, and I thought that might be just as expensive as replacing it.
The problem is the kickdown on the Dynaflow...you have to fab something up to make it work or make a cable to pull the lever running through the firewall into the car like a choke knob or something and that can even act as a line loc as well, you can pull that thing in and stall the engine up higher..thats an old drag racer tip!!
