A buddy of mine has a 56 Buick with a 322 nailhead. The Dynaflow took a crap a couple of weeks ago .

He was thinking about doing the TH350 conversion but he´d like to have it back on the road as soon as possible, since the Buick is his daily driver. So the conversion would take too long and will be done later, maybe during the winter.

Now I ´ve found a Dynaflow from a 58 Buick with a 364 nailhead and I wonder if it would bolt right up with the 322? A no brainer or a big deal?
    Thanks for the input!

It oughta bolt up, but it's like putting a band-aid on a decapitation. Dynas are born to fail.

There's 2 ways to look at this-

Upgrade now, so you don't have to later. OR....

...swap Dynaflows for "practice" so next time it'll be easier. With all the hardware recently removed/replaced, it will be much simpler to perfroma the upgrade to T350 or whatever.

Personally, I don't like to practice on tranny swaps. I've done plenty, thank you.

I do understand the need to get the car mobile again, but man..what a ton of work to have to go back and re-do later.

    Good luck with it all.

Your stock 56 has a torque tube, so a turbo 350 conversion is a lot of work, not just adapting the trans to the engine.

My memory is a little fuzzy, but I think the bellhousing bolt patterns are different between the 264/322 and the 364/401/425 engines. So what I am saying is that the 58 364 is not a bolt-in swap. You need a trans that was behind a 264 or 322.

Thanks guys, that´s what I supposed to be the issue, since I saw there are different adapter kits for 264/322 and later nailheads.

The 58 /364/Dynaflow was the only one I could find around here and believe me, I´ve asked a lot of guys.

My buddy wants to get rid of the Dynaflow since he had got his Buick, so , now he ´s got the chance to do the conversion.

    Thanks for the info!

Absolutely correct, they are different. Sorry the 364 Dynaflow won't work...

I thought I would add that I rebuilt my dynaflow 10 years ago and I have over 90k on it now including a trip up the entire western seaboard in 01 and have had no trouble. Properly maintained and adjusted. They will last forever. Problem with them is nobody ever services them. Good Luck

To get a dynaflow rebuilt costs alot of money. I did it and regeted it I know its alot of work to change the rear end and all but it will probably cost about the same maybe a little more. I belive the rear end out of a cutlass will fit right in. Make it into a four link and retain the panhard bar. Junk yards are your best friend.

If they are expensive to rebuilt here...
Then it might be even harder to find anybody that can do a good job rebuilding one at a fair price in Germany...
That Buick is a rare car overthere, and he is using it.
Is that is your definition of a pussy?

  10. Can he put the 322 bellhousing on the 364 tranny?
That would get him back on the road.

you can put the 364 bellhousing on a 322 trams and vice versa but you may need to change the converter. This is done by removing all the cover bolts around the diameter of the ring gear and the remove the center bolt. do this with the trans standing on end. Then swap and replace the center bolt. You should have only .060 play. Good Luck with the dyno-saur.

does the '56 have an enclosed drive shaft? I am not sure. I know the '54s do. If that is the case a TH 350 swap will also require you a new rearend and drive shaft.

And lighten up a bit there metalshapes, it wasnt directed to anyone specifically. Hell, it wasnt even serious. I like my dynaflow, but people are scared away by the bad reputation, thats all. -J.Dynaflowowner
