Never named any car or a bike i've owned, but i call names for people who are messing with their shitboxes in the traffic..
When I was in the Army I had an old Chevy 4x4 Carryall that the PO wrecked and had repaired in Mexico. It had bondo an inch thick in places. One of the MP's in my platoon named it the Bondo Buggy. Still refer to it that way over 40 years later. The '39 p/u in my avatar is "Rusty" for obvious reasons.
Owned my Chevy since 1972 and it's always been referred to by everyone I know as "The 32" so I guess that's its name.
The name is on the fender. It was put there by the manufacturer. Ascribing the traits of a living being to an inanimate object isn't a behavior I engage in.
My chevy II is named "Plan II". my bulldozer was named "Spot" because he always marked his territory. My wife's Dart (which has always been Top Banana yellow) was named the Nukemobile...she got it when she was in the Nuclear engineering program in college. The crown vic was "Cop Car". the rest never got names
My first car was a 61 Impala 348/3 speed, always had starting problems. I called it... start dammit...start dammit...start dammit...start dammit!!!
My friends named my coupe in school ,The Boznetic coupe. After a cartoon show in the 70s.They still call it that .
Our family always names our cars. I've had a green S10 named Larry, a Pontiac named Poncho and a white Mustang named Mr. Ed. The current fleet started with my daughters yellow Super Beetle named Miss Bee. My Chevy is Obie. My Sons Falcon is Carl. Even our two silver Honda Civics are named Kenmore and Maytag. Those two are interchangeable since they're really just appliances.
Never cared to name a car. the Factory did well enough for me. What I call them on the other hand, is hardly ever complimentary.
"Black Betty"- Blitz Black '59 Impala taildragger. "Heavy Chevy"- '78 Silverado with 9" of lift & 40" tires. (named by Dad) "Fang"- '80 Monte Carlo (named by a buddy in high school, because a piece of trim would hang from the corner of the front bumper... I never fixed it) "Nadine, Nadine, the Sex Machine"- my current roadster project. Nadine was a buddy's Mother's name from 10th grade ( TOTAL M.I.L.T.F. !!!). We all used to meet up and play pond hockey at their house & Nadine would always have hot coa coa waiting for us when we were done. I got punched in the shoulder a gut many times for that little chant! Ahhh,...Good times!!!
I dont name mine, but my lady named her ol yellow wagon "Sunshine" for obvious reasons. Also she says it always brightens her day... I can dig that.
My old Volvo Amazon "hot rod" was named the "Suede Swede" - it was (yup , you guessed it) suede black , and a Swedish car . Plus , I thought it was pretty clever to change just one letter & have each word . My current project is labelled "the Penny Pincher" , because (obviously) I am pinching pennies to do the project without taking any money out of "family money" ... and doin' pretty good so far ! My daughter calls it The Hot Rod , but then again , she doesn't know it's really a Custom , and I'm not tellin' her . I don't think I ever named any other cars I've owned , and I've owned a bunch .
My OT Warlock is lovingly referred to as Lucinda. She's never been "the truck", or "my ride"... always Lucinda.
My youngest son has come up with mine. My 26 T modified is painted with ppg brown epoxy primer(red oxide) so he gave it the name Brownie. My 32 sedan That Im building now he gave the name Rusty because it had some surface rust on it when I brought it home. I think he was 5 or 6 years old at the time. Brownie Rusty
My 57 body was teetering, as we were mating it back onto the frame. ( 3 people on 4 jacks) My Uncle yelled out "This things a three legged dog!" I said, "There you go.. it's been named!"
I've never named a car, but my project car will have 2 names. The first until I manage to actually get it on the road...Willy's Folly. The second is sort of a tribute to my uncle, the person who was responsible for me being a car nut at an early age. His building a car from the ground up instilled in me the desire to do the same. His old hot rod magazines introduced me to the first hot rod to really catch my eye...the bobtail T Tweedy Pie. His car...The Little Red Car My bobtail T will be...The Little Green Car
Mines Jarvis. It just felt right. He's a maroon color, much like Iron Man colors, and he seemed sophisticated enough to fit the name. Seems an apt side kick.
Never named my cars, "Money Pit" fits the picture well, all of my racers had " ShitBox" on them, saw that on Jan Opperman, #99 Bogar Sprint car, way back in the day, liked it, copied it, used it.
Would never actually put a name or a signature on a car unless a famous person had raced it once or built it or something like that. But me and my brother both name our hot rods just so we can easily refer to each them. He named his 33 Chevy Coupe Eleanor because it was hard to purchase and his 32 Chevy Coupe Jeezebel because it is wicked. My 30 Ford Coupe was named Weeze after Louise Post.
My father was building a 36 Ford three window a few years back and at first didn't have a front clip for it. I suggested he try fitting a 41 Willy's front clip on it and even though it ended up with all Ford sheet metal, we ended up nicknaming it "Wilford" for Willy's/Ford.
I've never named cars but our current project has inherited a couple of names. My wife calls it "Betty", a term of endearment I always use when referring to her (my wife) as my mistress. My son, who was 8 years old at the time, came home one day from school and announced "I learned on the bus today that the most poisonous snake in the world is named Momma Black Tongue!" Of course we looked up the most poisonous snake on Google and discovered that the "Black Mamba" was the real name, but it just didn't roll off the tongue as cleanly. He and I have been calling the car "Momma Black Tongue" ever since.
A bit off topic here. But my vw based street buggy is called speed buggy. After the 70's scooby doo spinoff cartoon series. Plus it's pretty fast with a built 1835
Had a 68 Harley I built from a basket case when I was 20, went home dirty a lot of nights. I called her dirty deeds. Had a big brown olds 98, 4 Dr hardtop. 19 1/2 ft long. The ol lady called it the poopmobile. When we were teenagers, my buddy had a 59 olds. All the girls would ask, "what kinda car is that" we tell em its a 59 pervertable. They never wanted a ride.
And I thought no one here had heard of Jan Opperman , cool. When I decided to build my roadster with a dirt track theme, I wondered what Jan might have done if he built a hiboy roadtser.
