I had a request from a customer today to narrow his housings and stock axles to an overall width of 56" to use in his Halibrand rear axle. I have done several of these using the 9" housing ends but never keeping everything stock. I was curious about how you handle the taper in the housing and where you would cut them. I think I would make a sleeve to keep the taper smooth but that may not be necessary. I believe Winters makes some new axles but I am sure I could shorten, re-taper and cut new key ways in the original ones. Before you ask, the customer wants it done this way for his own reasons and is not interested in options. I told him I would research the project and let him know. The HRW's has done these so I know it can be done. Has anyone done this in their garage or had the HRW do one? Photos of the taper would be nice. Thanks, Lynn
