    Whutcha got?

I'm looking for something narrower than 57" (face of drum to face of drum....wheel mounting surface).

I'd like to find something closer to 54" or 55" wide. I can have a buddy re-stud the axles.

If no such animal exists, I'll have to just use an 8 incher and narrow it up a bit.

I have a '91 Ranger rear that I can measure when I get home. You want real narrow, Taylor-Dunn Electrucks come with super-narrow Ford 9" and disk brakes. Not really that hard to find.

I think what you're looking for comes from Mavericks and Comets.

  3. Jim, try looking under a forklift - I have a GM 10 bolt (i know, ugly and relatively weak) that looks like an aftermarket pro street rear - it's really narrow. Maybe there are some bigger models that run a width closer to what you need. I know you can sometimes find Ford 9" under 'em too ...

    Mopar 8 3/4 rear...Abody style
I believe they are 55 inches and hold the same bolt pattern.

Early nova, chevy II is 56" I think

  10. I don't think I have one but a first gen S-10 2 wheel drive is 54.25 flange to flange. They should be pretty easy to come by about anywhere. If you want it to be a posi it takes the same carrier as the Camero and firebird of the same era, as well as any number of GM 10 bolts.

If you get too narrow, you run into the next problem with backing plates running into the spring leafs. The original 8 3/4 out of early "A" body mopars fit like a glove in the first place, and I'm pretty sure Reed up in Wittman has one in stock. I could be up for a run that dirrection if you want to see. Same weirdo bolt pattern too... 5X4"

Yeah Pn******, I'm thinking 1st gen. S-10. Chip, I want to lose that goofy 4" pattern. S-10's have 4.75" pattern so that would make getting a coupl'a 5 spokes pretty easy. I'm more than willing to move the springs in too.

The narrowest 8 3/4 is from the Dart/Demon body and is 57" overall with a 5 on 4" bolt pattern. I had one...

You didn't say what it's for, but maybe a different rim backset would be a better choice?

How much HP are you running through it?

Jeep DJ axles are 53" across all Dana 44 bearings and gears will fit, they come with 11" brakes.

Got an extra one if you pay for the ride.

    Not much....pretty stock 225 6!

I appreciate it, but I see an s-10 rear in the future of this car (sorry, sort of off topic '63 Dart).

I take it the stock axle flange isn't big enough to accept a larger bolt circle then?

I haven't measured it, but everyone on the mopar boards say there is room to re-stud the larger pattern. I'm just looking for a bit narrower, so the s-10 will afford me that little extra...I think. Just wanted to know which way to start researching. I'm not doing ANYTHING 'til I've done my own measuring!

    thanks

Just watch the horsepower... the GM 7.5 rears are VERY weak.

I have a shortened 9 inch Ford housing. It has never been mounted.

Okay here is what I learned from my elders. You find a 57-59 Ford 9" it measures 57" overall at the brake drums. Then you find the short axle from a 60-63 9" rearend. Then you shorten the long side of the 57-59 housing 2", this by the way will center the rearend. The overall width is now 55". I learned this from a bunch old guys while I was shuttin up and doin the dirty work for them 25 years ago.
