Bought a set of Navarro heads at an auction last Saturday and was wondering what your thoughts were as to the true value. I know they make these new but this is an original set. Not interested in selling them just curious if I bought them at a good price. CTJ

  3. If you are happy with what you bought them for then it was a good price.

What was the price you paid that you want an opinion on?
And what kind of auction was it -- general antique, farm, hot rod...?

I'd rather not say what I paid since I may have over paid! It was an incredible auction at the home of a local veterinarian that had p***ed. He had several old Fords, old tractors, antiques, tools, flathead speed parts etc. I also bought a polished Fenton 2 deuce intake and an Offy 3 deuce intake for a flathead, old Isky spring set and 42-47 Ford spindles. they were racing heads, no water outlet for a radiator, just a 3/4'' pipe plug. intake was odd also, don't remember why. bought about 30 sets of heads for $15-$30 over the years, 70 intakes about the same price. sold most of them, kept enough for the rest of my life.....

The question you need to ask yourself is, when was the last time you saw a set forsale, if so. How much were they listed for and when do you think you will see another set for sale. Egay dosen`t count, you can`t hold them in your hands and inspect them before you buy them. How much do you think they will increase in price in the future. And if you do see another set in the future that is priced cheaper, Buy them also and you can tell yourself you got a hell of a deal.

Obviously you have no idea what these are worth. I wouldn't be wondering if I got a deal had I paid $100 for them. Everyone knows they are worth more than that! Except you...

I believe you are insane to think they are only worth $200. My $.02.

Let's recap. Someone said they are worth 1/2 of new which would be $362.50 and you said that you paid less than that. "I did better than well" was the quote. Then two people said they are worth $100 to $200 and you say that they are "insane". What exactly is the price you would want us to tell you?

Not asking for a particular price just a realistic one. I just think that these people that think you could buy these so cheap these days are crazy. You never see them for sale except for the new ones so obviously they are rare and worth more than a couple hundred. CTJ

It may not be the best way but the way I figure used parts value is, first of all do I need the part, or am I thinking of flipping it and making a buck. If I can buy an excellent used part (80-90% of new cond.) that I really need, 50% of current new price is a good deal. A good used part is proven quality whereas a new part probably will be good (unknown). If it's a part that is no longer available, I decide how cool it is and how bad I want it and base the value on those criteria. I don't spend the grocery money on it and don't care what anyone else thinks of the value. When the time comes to sell, sell for the best price you can get. Sometimes you make money sometimes you lose money. Own stuff you enjoy having. Just my 2 cents worth. Have fun and good luck!

If you know what they're worth, why bother asking?

I never said I knew what they were worth thats why i started the thread. I just happen to think they are worth more than a couple hundred bucks.

And I'm not sure why you feel the need to even post an uncalled for comment like this. Makes me think you are the 13 y/o...

Most people ask, "What's it worth?", because they want to sell something and they don't want to sell it too cheap. I take you at your word that you are not one of those people and you just want to know if you overpaid, or made a good buy.

Obviously you know what a good buy would be, so you must be interested to know if you overpaid. No embarr***ment there. Everybody on this site has overpaid at one time, or another. Hell, I probably overpay most of the time.

If you reveal the price that you paid, you might get more meaningful answers.

Great looking heads, by the way.

I have no intention to sell these heads, merely looking for a fair current market value. I have overpaid for some items. If I think they are cool or interesting I don't care what the cost is. These fall into that category but I think I bought them right.

I fail to agree with you about getting meaningful answers if I reveal the price. People should just be respectful and answer the question asked without needing to be rude or asking the price. I always tell my son that it's rude to ask what people paid for something. I also don't like talking price because certain people would think you are bragging about how much you spent on something.

Clearly I should have just been happy with my purchase and not worried about how good of a deal I got on the heads.

I have been involved with flatheads most of my adult life. I buy and sell old speed parts and flathead speed equipment to help fund projects that I am working on. I do know the value of the Navarro heads you just purchased. Before I tell you the value there are some things to be considered when purchasing a set of used flathead aluminum heads. First you have to inspect them very closely. You are looking for cracks or evidence of repair. If you see either one just p*** and move on. Next you turn the heads over and look at the water coolant p***ages to see if there is light corrosion or heavy corrosion. There is light corrosion on your heads so this means they should be OK for usage. P*** on the heavily corroded heads. Next you look to see if the heads have been planed down. You should be able to feel a ridge around the cir***ference of the heads,if there is no ridge be very careful in considering a purchase.Lastly look for chipped fins and stripped threads in the spark plug holes. These flaws can be repaired. Your heads look to be good in these areas as well. New heads from H & H flatheads go for $725. They are cast from Barney Navarro's original molds but technically they are reproductions. The new Navarro heads are just excellent and would be my choice if I was building an engine. The heads are new and the aluminum is far superior to the aluminum back in Barney's day. Old flathead aluminum heads can go soft through time but they can be heat treated back to T5 specs. Sometimes it dosen't work, just depends on the heads. A NOS (new old stock) pair of original Navarro heads will fetch $1000. plus. Your heads look good and should bring $300. to $400. about half the cost of a new set of Navarro heads from H & H flatheads. Five years ago the prices were much higher but with the current economic situation this is about where we stand.Enjoy your Navarro heads!
