Funny thing happened when I got home last night. I had a nice letter from the DMV letting me know that my '57 Buick was ok. They called me in for an inspection last month. Made me laugh. Though the one thing that is funny is that the '64 425 in it is now the engine of record. Made me laugh.

And just an FYI, a good place to start is to go to this page and find you district office for the License and Theft.

    I deal with these folks
    3231 Avent Ferry Road, 27606
    Ph: (919) 816-9197 Fax: (919) 816-9643

But if you go to http://www.ncdot.org/dmv/office_locations/?officeType=5&pickCounty=402&count=1 and enter your county, I'd start with the District office. They have it seperated into 4 districts.

I do not know why he has to wait 3 years. That seems like someone dropped the ball to me. When I did my 55 in 2002 I had the bonded title thing and got my title in the mail 2 or 3 weeks later. With a 51 Chevy I did early last year I got the buyer to get the bond on his insurance, I then filed for the title using his bond because all the documents I had were in my name. I got that title 5-6 weeks later and then transfered the title to him. Same deal I have never got a letter from an inspector and to my knowledge neither has the new owner.

I would tell your friend to contact the insurance company that issued the bond. Have the agent call the DMV and see why the title has not been issued. A bonded Title is only supposed to be bonded for 1 year (well it used to be) to protect you from someone coming up with a title and saying that vehicle is thiers and not yours. If that happens then the insurance pays the claimant the value of the vehicle at the time the title was issued. After 1 year they have no claim to it any more (according to what I was told in 2002). Or have your friend get an attorney to call DMV and get it that way. Either way 3 years is way too long IMHO.

This is most definitely the case in NC. And, it does matter which office you go to. Some are easier than others. In any case, you'll have to have the inspector inspect it and sign off.

    Oh,hell YEAH it's worth going through the hassle. It's a 1934 Ford.

Your Ford was titled by the frame number,so you are golden. You will end up with a title for a 1934 Ford, regardless of what engine you put in it or what you do to it.

This is especially true since you say you will never sell it. Never is a LOT longer than 3 years. You have the time to wait.

If it is a project car that doesn't run and/or isn't complete, you may want to consider applying for a title only, not a registration. That way you won't have to buy license plates and insurance on it.

  10. You can sell it to me right now, New York doesn't give a shit if it has a title. Heck I once registered a car from PA and they didn't even want to look at the PA title I had, I still have it here in a folder someplace. Just put the sucker on eBay and state in big letters you won't sell it to anyone from North Carolina -

The DMV office in Concord (on the city line right next to Kannapolis) is not a private contractor operated branch. All the DMV people in the office wear DMV uniforms and are state employees.

From what I read so far ,using a frame with a visible factory number and using an original body should not be a real problem....by all means get a NC title in your name and preferably before you sink a lot of time & money into it...then when it's finished and you tag it ,any inspector that pops outta the trees should be able to see that its really a '34 Ford...

If you start the process now you will have the numbers visable to the inspector instead of them not knowing where to look and stuff. If you only title it now it should not matter that it is still a project but thats just my oppinion. I would start the title process now.

In my experiences on this subject, the car was supposed to be road worthy, and they checked vin numbers and engine numbers. The DMV officer was great to deal with, however, was sure that everything was in order. I was told to have a bond for the car for three years, however, I had a title in the mail in two weeks. The bond is simply cya, for YOUR protection of your investment. I have not heard of having to wait that bond period for a title. My DMV inspector had to check my car twice , however, because the lady at the tag office got the VIN on the registration wrong. That second time he came to my house to check the car, I was at work and he called me to tell me everything was OK. The only complaint I had at that point was having to pay for the registration twice in one month. I'm sure experiences can vary, but as was stated earlier, you need them they do not need you, so common courtesy goes a long way.

    So here's my update...

I got a letter in the mail today from the DMV saying I need to get a bonded title. The DMV inspector told I'd have a title, so I'm kind of at a loss as to why I don't. I'm going to call him tomorrow to see if I can find out anything. Otherwise, I'm going to get the ball rolling to get the bonded title. Sucks, but I guess that's the way it is. Probably all a money issue.

Yeah, I guess so. All I wanted to do was show somebody who didn't know how to get legit papers for their car while I went through it myself. Oh well. I'll update it until they lock it, lol. :D

Good friend of mine moved up from south carolina, has nice 40 ford truck he built. Had to remove the bed of the truck to show original numbers. I had sold him the truck and had already had the truck inspected by a south carolina dmv inspector. I think it's just getting harder to enjoy hot rodding. Maybe I just need more government to tell me what I like.

Any updates yet? Everyone's experience on this is different it seems. Like I stated before I have had a bond on my car, but I did not have to wait on a title, however, it was 3 years ago when I went through this. Good Luck!

Just a quick update. I have not gotten the title yet, but I also have not gotten any letters from DMV or anything negative. If anything happens I will post it.
