Hey, you that same greywolf from FTE a couple years ago? I can't remember why but that yapping dog face is making my spidey senses tingle.

Oh, yeah, the squareback. I knew a VW mechanic that lived in one, seems like the electronic fuel infection was hard to find parts for.

I cut my teeth on 4 of them, all I could afford on Airman 3rd class pay. I still have a soft spot for them, easy to fix, cheap to keep and thrifty on gas makes a good commuter car for some.

There are a ton of closet aircooled fans here. And if you pay attention on Volksrods you'll notice there are a lot of HAMBers there. But, Ryan has made a valid point that VW chatter should be kept to a minimum on the HAMB.

I think a lot of gearheads cut their teeth on VWs. They're easy to learn with. Every middle-aged guy I run into when I drive my Super tells me a story about some VW in his past.

I ran into a guy with a baja a couple weeks back. I really dug his whole philosophy. The thing was minimal as all hell, and boiler plated to take a nuclear blast. He cut off any of the body that was unnecessary. That helps with ground clearance, approach and departure angles, etc, but also makes it easier to get to the engine for maintenance. He had quick-release setups for light bars and anything else that seemed like a good idea to make easily removable. He periodically touches it up with $0.99 spray bombs. He had almost no money in it. The car was originally $50. The only frill it had was a huge crazy stereo. And the heater worked good he said. It had IROC wheels for some reason, but he bought them cheap too. Apparently he drives it year round and does ice racing and all kinds of crazy stuff. Cool use of a motor vehicle if you ask me. That guy is my spiritual guide in working on my Super. It won't be an off-roader but it will be ridiculously practical and hopefully, eventually, relatively bulletproof.

Ahhh the squareback I got one in a trade about ten years ago in fact I got two type I's (59',67') and the type III (63') for a 66 hightop type II they are fun as hell to drive and quick if you put twin 2bbl carbs I was allways afraid to smoke in my type III cause it had a slight gas leak that ran down the floorboards it was explosion just waiting to happen.

The best story I can tell you is once upon a time I was pumping some gas with the decklid or hood or bonnet or whatever the hell you want to call it up and some ol country boy was askin me "whatchew doin with the hood up" so I says "pumpin gas!" he then replied "no, you aint not up there you aint!" I told him to come over and take a look all he did was shake his head and say "damn foreigners, I fought to keep those fuckers out of america and you damn commies are bringen em in. screw you!" and proceeded to walk off. That was the last time I heard that cause I sold that POS and grabed a 65 merc ParkLane from some old dude that bought it new in 65' and get this only 42K original. OK Ill shut up now, but I will always reminisce about the VW's

Ha! Good story. But. We all know that Mercury was built by Henry Ford's company. And Henry Ford was pen pals with Hitler or somehow buddy buddy anyway. Thus, Kevin Bacon.

What would that guy have done if you were driving a Tucker?

Actually, Volkswagons have their place in traditional hot rodding.

Here's an example of traditional hot rodders enjoying a "warmed over" volkswagon powerplant at the bend in the road at Bonneville. :)

That's because they were a cheap crappy car to start.

You've been breathing too many exhaust fumes!

  15. Nice looking car.
And I like the simplicity of air-cooling an' all, not to mention the fuel mileage aspect.
But to say it is the ONLY car that is old and non-Honda to get over 30 mpg is ludicrous...

Does a VW even GET 30 mpg??

Citroën 2CV6 drivin' Cosmo...who gets 35 mpg every stinkin' day...

My first car was a Squareback. I loved it. So much that when I found a Fastback years later I bought it. Then another Squareback...then another...In fact I always keep my eyes out for non rusty Type III's. Just missed on one yesterday.

That one that ya posted? Sweet as hell. They make damned good daily rides and to me they have great lines, once they're dropped.

But wtf is up with you guys that are puttin' 'em down so hard? Oh ok Tikis and surfer stuff go together hand in hand with hot rods and customs, but VW's don't? Jesus Chrysler if ya fuckin' squint they look like a goddamned fifty's car on a diet. Is it just the fact that they are foreign? Is it that they are small...don't have a vfuckin'8 or that to give them the right stance takes a whole 3 hours to do the front and the back? Not enough work for ya? I don't get it. To each their own, but step outside of yer little box once in a while. :D

    augh.

i started working on vw's when i was 16 years old. i just quit with them a few years ago.

very few people in the vw industry think out of the box. brm's, empi 5's, blah blah blah. its all basically the same crap. has been for years. you can look at a vw magazine from 10 years ago, and other than color combinations, its all basically the same. i still have two vw's, and i cant hardly give them away.

and yes, for me to like a car, it has to have a v8. i dont care what the cost of gas is, for a vw to be fun, it wont get good gas mileage.

    Hey Trey...

I'll give you that...that the vw crowd is pretty fuggin' lame when it comes to outside the box thinkin'. But...the same can be said for the mentality of nearly all genres of car enthusiasts. I never did get along with most other vw owners myself, but I didn't have vw's so I could meet people...I had 'em 'cause I liked 'em and had fun with 'em.

Bash 'em if ya want. Love 'em if ya want. I've just never understood why they are so taboo with hot rodders...v8 or not.

Not so taboo with hotrodders, just taboo here. A few of the Veedub fans come out of the closet on a thread like this but if you have been around here for any length of time then you know they are not particularly popular on this board and actually quite despised by the powers that be.
I had a really nice 85 Monte Carlo a few years back that averaged around 27 and I have an old 88 Grand Marquis that does about that. I sure wouldn't give up comfort for a couple more mpg.
And there is still lots of cool falcons Chevy2s Rambler Americans, Valients ect. that will do great on gas and are cheap to buy.

  23. I think you oughta be glad I don't have a "delete" button for this forum. This VW crap would be history in about 7/8ths of a second. This is a board for traditional rods and customs and the guy that pays the bills here HATES VW stuff...
Don't even think of trying to post any of that shit on the classifieds...
Actually, I'd like to do a cal-look bug but it doesn't belong on this board....drop it.
