  1. Back in 78 a buddy and i found a 28 rpu on a tin hunt driving around the country side. I don't know who spotted it first but we saw something in a patch of trees in the middle of a field. We both ran for it like it was a race. Discovered a early 28 roadster pickup body and frame. It had all the things i needed. W/shield posts, top bows, w/shield frame w/ mirror bkt, great rust free body, no holes in mean, nice doors and hinges, box, fenders bkts front and rear, head lite bar and buckets, tail lited and bkts, virgin frame. He was into V8 era, i was into anything. So i got it.
After locating the owner of the property by driving from farm house to farm house. We got the go to get it. FREE FREE FREE. Next weekend we showed up 4 strong armed with 3-4 come-a-longs joined end to end each cranking thier own till we dragged it out of the bush. This was after cutting the trees that where growing between the rails and anyplace else they could. Rest is history.
I have it in my garage today

    a 1960 kingswood wagon.
I bought a running driving 60 bel air more door for 800 and asked about the wagon. Guy said it didnt have a title and since I didnt try to haggle on the bel air, I could have the wagon as long as I removed it that weekend. Ended up trading the wagon for a 57 chevy 2 door wagon.

most recently i got given my grandfathers 1936 studebaker. mostly to keep it in the family. but boy i was excited about that. i've always wanted that car and now it's in my garage. but a few years ago my brother told me about a 74 maverick grabber that his friends dad had sitting in his back yard. i go check it out at best it was a rusted out parts car. he tried to tell me that it had a 302 boss in it. i then informed him that it was a standard 302 and the engine was origional to the car. when i first talked to him he wanted 500 for it but after about 15 minutes he says to me i just want the car gone you can have it. took it home striped it and put the black interior into my 73 comet. i love it when people try to sell you junk as something better then what it is and you call them out on it.

  11. I was 15 years old in 1965 and I got a free '57 Chevy 2 dr post 150 from my dad's friend. Non-running 6 cylinder 3 speed. I had it running the next night. Later on I changed over to a .125" over 265 and 4 speed. Drove it through high school and the first two years of college. I sold it in 1970 and I've missed it every day since.

Breaks my heart (again) to tell this one. I was given a '33 Ford 3W body, pretty solid, too. I lined up a running chassis w. 4-speed and limited-slip rear, a running DeSoto Hemi, a good welding shop, and all I needed to get the whole car roughed-up & ready for all the details was a period Ford radiator & shell.

But, life was moving fast, money was tight, and I had too many projects and TOO LITTLE space! I let a friend have it just for taking it away, 'cause he said he'd build the coupe. But I moved away for a distant job, and I never heard how (or if) the coupe came out.

    But, yeah. It WAS free!

Just a few years ago I got a 52 Ford coupe for the hauling, His wife wanted the yard again. The trunk held a bunch of flathead peices. Several years back I got a 60's VW rolling body no eng, traded it for some old tools. Other stuff over the years and my first car was a 52 Chev my folks bought for $100 just to shut me up.

  22. Summer of 1962, I got a job cuttin the lawn (about an acre) of the ole guy down the street. Usually took me 2 afternoons, then the next week I'd clean out his wifes (1/4 acre rose garden), the next week the lawn again. He paid me 8 bucks a week.
At the end of summer , gettin ready to go back to school, the ole timer asked me if I'd like an old car he had in the shed.
Sure I said, but does it run?
He said he started it every month or so,all we had to do was jack it up and get some new tires, cause it had been sittin so long.
Went over to the shed and a 1933 Vicky was sittin in there.
The original paint was still shiney.
Needless to say I was stoked.
Drove that thing for about 6 months, then tore it down and stuffed a 283 in it.
Had it for about 5 years and sum "rich Kid" offered me $2500 for it so I sold it.

  23. I've had many freebies over the years but I'll hit some highlights.

10 years ago, my newspaper ad wanting "a cheap or free old project car"

Yuppie guy calls, come get a free 63 Mercury Monterey 4dr. He bought it to restore but decided it was "too big". (compared to his 5 series BMW) Said he's getting a 1959 MGA instead and wants the Mercury "to go to a good home". Also told me "it's complete and not in real bad shape."

I hook up my trailer and head over. When I arrive he says "you won't need the trailer, it drives OK". He opens the garage door...

68,000 miles, original faded paint, a straight rust free body, perfect chrome, 4 new pinner whitewalls, original hubcaps, spare tire never been on the ground, original interior is covered with the old plastic seat protectors so upholstery is like new. Runs and drives perfect, has working A/C and the original license plates have current tags!! Oh, almost forgot the new battery.

I drove it a couple hundred miles over the next few months then sold it to a friend for $1500. He's still driving it today and has never had any major problems, now has 105,000 miles.

Same newspaper ad, a few weeks later.......

Woman says come get a rusty 50's Mercury for free. (doesn't know year model) I go look...... 1958 Mercury Turnpike Cruiser 4dr. Very complete but floors and trunk rusted out. Sold almost every part off that car except for the frame and front suspension.

    20 years ago..........

My friend tells me his dad wants an old car out of his pole barn. 1947 Pontiac Torpedo. We load up the Pontiac and I tell "dad" I like his old Ford flatbed. (in same photo as Torpedo) He tells me $800 will drive it home, so I did.

Few days later "dad" calls me and says his neighboor has a couple old free cars. They were a 1960 Buick Invicta 4dr hardtop in nice shape but a worn out engine and a 1949 VW Deluxe convertable cut into a Baja Bug. (VW's weren't imported to the USA until 1951-2)

I worked for an old gentlemen that run a junk yard [the year was 1955] I was 15 years old. he sent me to an old shed to get something for him and lo and behold there was a 33 ford 5 window in there. needless to say I begain trying to beg borrow or steal the car but it wasent for sale. after 21 years of trying he gave me the car that he told me had been in the shed sence 1947. I had to promise I wouldnt make a hot rod out of it as long as he was living. I honored his wishes. its been a street rod since 1999.

  26. My Dad ended up with a few free cars over the years. He owned a restaurant next to US 50 in western Colorado. A guy comes in near closing time one night with a '66 Mustang that is making an awful sound - he burned up a front wheel bearing and the spindle was ground to a point - it was a miracle the front wheel stayed on! He was on his way to Salt Lake City, and couldn't go any farther. The guy asked Dad if he would accept the Mustang for a bus ticket to SLC. Dad naturally accepted, fixed the car, and drove it for nearly eight years.

Another near-freebie he got was a '63 Chevy C-10. The owner lost everything except the truck, a rifle, a shotgun, and his dog in a nasty divorce. He decided to become a hermit in the mountains, and brought the truck by. He knew my Dad liked Chevy trucks, so he stopped by and offered the truck to him for a hundred bucks. Mind you, this was a near-mint C-10 Custom 4x2 SWB, one-owner, red/white, with the quietest 250 Six you ever heard run. Dad offered him more, because it was a very nice Chevy! But, the guy said that's all he needed for it, so he got the $$$, handed Dad the title and walked awaywith his dog, guns, and backpack; presumably to the mountains to live like a hermit. Never saw the guy again.

A '51 chevrolet 5 window. He said he bought it in the early 80's and was using it on his farm outside of perkins,Ok till early 2008. He told me to come and get it.
