Well like them or not and run them or not they are called "drip rails" for a reason. Anyone who really drives a car or truck without them (the 48 has them shaved off) can tell you that any time you get caught in a serious rain storm will get at least some water in the car or truck.
Sometimes we get way too many people on here who forget that building a car is all about personal taste and having or not having drip rails is right in the big middle of the personal taste issue. There were just as many chopped cars with them as without them back in the early days of customs.

I have brand new belt-line trim, that was gonna go on til I flamed it. So I decided to just keep it.

BTW-I seriously doubt there were any chopped Mercs with drip rails back then. The shops that were chopping Mercs pretty much removed them on all of them. I don't think I have seen one chopped Merc with drip rails from the 50's. Now,I could be wrong....Seems like the ones that kept the rails were the un-chopped ones.

  4. Im not saying their is anything wrong with driprails but I think it is more of a modern trait on customs.Everyone builds cars how they want but........... If you are trying to build a timepiece car then I would think the driprails would have to go.Thats all,i think this thread got a little crazy.

Bullshit. My own car was cut in 1954 and has drip rails.I can name many more.

  7. Maybe on the eastcoast there were some early ones that had the drip rails but not very many on the West.I also never claimed that every single car from back then had them off but a shitload got rid of them. All I was saying is that it is more common these days then it was back then.

    Hey,

You could build some from some 18 Gage C.R.S. a large sheetmetal brake & a shrinker/stretcher. I'd start by laying out some string taped to the exact shape you'll need to fill your window openings, that's how much material you'll need. I'd try and build them without splices as welding of a butt or scarf joint is tough to finish out without alot of skill. Be sure to leave plenty of a tab on the non rolled sides to allow for welding & trimming.

why do people have to call bullshit on stuff they don't know if its true or not?

there has always been a big difference in custom cars between the east and west coast. the east coast has and still does customs in a way i don't like that much. vie always been around the cars from the west coast. those are what i grew up on and what i like. just like some people don't like the west coast style of customs. all in all. there customs.
