Need 283 Info Quick!!

    yo..does anyone know if a front mount 283 motor will match up in a 54 chev??? I have a chance to buy one but its the block with no side mounts....has anyone done/seen this??? thanks

    Are you sure it is a 283 with no side mounts?

    usually the 265 had front mounts and the 283's were side... i think.

    1957 Chevrolet 283s did not have provisions for side mounts. The side mounts came in 1958.

    57 283 had no side mounts. It will fit fine, but you have to use a mid mount of some type to keep the engine from rocking. in 53 and 54, Chevy installed 265s in 53 and 54 Chevys for road testing.

    thanks for the quick replies...can you buy mid mounts or do you have to fab something??? Is this a tough install???

    Early v-8 Vettes had front mounts, and the frame and suspension was essentially the same as a early 50s convertible sedan.

    Speedway Motors should be able to fix you up with about every thing you need. In the 60s this swap was about as common as dirt and about as easy as falling off a log.
